Remove/or not earlier versions
I have just loaded PSP x4, but have PSP X on system. Thought there would be some mention as to whether to remove or not earlier version. (Was unsure what would happen to photographs already on sytem if I removed PSP X). Not so, however, now unsure as to whether to remove both and reload X4, or what is the best procedure??? Thanks 25RFA66

Re: Remove/or not earlier versions
Not sure what your revised thinking implies. But there is no need to remove earlier versions. Quite a few users here have multiple versions installed, and most users seem to find there is no conflict between the versions. Indeed, some even find earlier versions useful in doing some things they cannot readily find or do in later versions. Of course you need to bear in mind that much earlier versions are not necessarily compatible with later versions of Windows...

Re: Remove/or not earlier versions
I have PSP versions 8, 9, X, XI, X2U, X3U, and X4U all on this computer. I can run any combination of them at the same time, and they coexist rather well.
Why do I do this? A bunch of reasons.
So, my preference is to not remove the older version of PSP when installing a newer one. Then again, that opinion plus a few $$ might be worth the purchase price of a free cup of coffee.
Why do I do this? A bunch of reasons.
- Some functions are easier or more convenient on one version or another.
- I usually have different default settings on the various installations of PSP, and I can have more than one open at the same time. For small projects, it may be easier to pick a particular version of PSP, rather than load various workspaces.
- Some of my design work, saved as a .pspfile, may be incompatible with another version of PSP. If I have no reason to change the project (maybe I just want to print something), I will not re-save the project to change its version compatibility. For design work, I usually store a .txt file containing notes (including which version of PSP was used) in the project folder.
- Some features exist across all of the versions, but they behave a little differently. One example is One Step Photo Fix--sometimes I'll have a gut feeling which version's implementation might work for a particular image.
- It is sometimes handy to be able to work around an unresolved bug in one version by using another version.
- Some plugins behave better in some versions of PSP.
- While most features of older versions are present in newer ones (though they may be hidden as Unused Commands), there are some feature differences. For example, older versions support integration with Animation Shop, newer versions have better HDR support, newer versions have additional adjustment features, etc. Versions prior to X2 allow having multiple instances of each open at the same time. The list goes on.
So, my preference is to not remove the older version of PSP when installing a newer one. Then again, that opinion plus a few $$ might be worth the purchase price of a free cup of coffee.

Re: Remove/or not earlier versions
Thanks to those people who answered my query. I will leave the earlier version on, but was a little concerned because there were a few hiccups with it from time to time. I am not a professional, and use it only for family photos, so will try to become familiar with the later version anyway. Many thanks, cheers

7 versions of ANY program (let alone a graphics program) installed is a little on the ridiculous side (in my "free coffee" opinionwds937 wrote:I have PSP versions 8, 9, X, XI, X2U, X3U, and X4U all on this computer. I can run any combination of them at the same time, and they coexist rather well.

Re: Remove/or not earlier versions
I personnally use versions 7, 8, 9, x2, and x3, together or in some combinations depending on the task i need to perform. i do know that "ALL" my versions can interchange images by the manner in which they are set to save the pspimage files.
in any version, open an image, jpeg, png, etc, then choose "save as pspimage" from the dropdown list. when the save box opens, select options, save as psp 7 compatible, (or whichever earliest version you have, though 7 would be best) and then close the program. (no need to actually save the file as you are setting only the format that will open the images you save. it's excellant for multiple use of tubes, frames, etc, in any version from 7 and up).

Re: Remove/or not earlier versions
Point well taken, with regard to the 7 versions. Day-to-day, I use X3 for about 90% of my image editing, with most of the remainder using 8 or X2; X4 is still up and coming for me. Other than to assist users on this board (and a couple of my wife's friends), I don't use 9, X, or XI much any more.jspratjr wrote:7 versions of ANY program (let alone a graphics program) installed is a little on the ridiculous side (in my "free coffee" opinion) - sorry, but other than providing the ability to help users on this board, think I'd take a hard look at finding a graphics program that worked a little better for your needs - there are plenty to choose from.
As concerns meeting my needs, PSP is my primary image editor; it meets my needs well. I have several other image editing applications on this computer (Corel and otherwise), but I mostly use them only for special effects or for some unique feature I think may fit a particular image. At work, I have CorelDRAW and Photoshop; I wish I had PSP.
Here's to free coffee!

Re: Remove/or not earlier versions
i have versions 7, 8, 9, x2 ,x3, and now x4 installed and tested all other jasc versions as trials, from the very first jasc version to 6. from 7 and up, they all work on xp, vista, and win 7 32 and 64 bit versions. usually they install to the 32 bit folders on a 64 bit system as is common for most of my software that is 32 bit, there being only a few 64 bit programs available at this time. for creativity, the best version i have found is 7, the most versatile, 9, x2, and x3 are fine for picture repairs and editting, but haven't tried x4 except once and ran into a problem with vector to raster, but i seem to have been given the work around, which is stupid, but needed, i guess.Ken Berry wrote:Not sure what your revised thinking implies. Re: Remove/or not earlier versions
I've run 7, 9, X3 and now x4. Currently installed are 9, X3, and X4 but will probably uninstall X3 soon because it crashes too much. Just upgraded to X4 and very happy with it so far. X9 will always be on my PC until such time it's no longer compatible. Could be a LONG time.
