I started a new project in video studio with nothing but digital pictures in jpg format. My project settings are as follows:
Microsoft AVI
24 bit 720x480 29.97 fps
lower field first
uncompressed
Interleave Audio for every 15 frames
PCM 48.000kHz Stereo
When I select the share option and choose NTSC-DVD with the default settings of
24 bit 720x480 29.97 fps
lower field first
DVD-NTSC 4:3
Video Data Rate Variable max 8000 kps
LPCM 48.000kHz Stereo
The rendering finishes and then "Failed To Open MPEG Coder" pops up. If I share as AVI it finishes fine and I can share it as NTSC-MPEG2 and it completes as well. Unfortunately NTSC-MPEG2 tends to jitter on the TV since it is frame based. I could use TmpGenc to convert the AVI file to mpg but I'd really like to know why I can't get it to save as NTSC DVD in VideoStudio. Any suggestions?

I would suggest that you change project settings to mpeg2 because AVI just causes an unnecessary conversion on the way to your DVD.
The following project settings work well for me:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First (lately I have noticed Video/audio sync problems with Lower Field First)
(MPEG-2), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

failed to open mpg encoder
I resolved the error loading the mpg encoder by comparing the uvs.ini from version 7 to 8. Thanks for the tip about going direct to mpeg instead of avi. Interesting about the audio sync issue. I'm having that issue with some dv that i imported with the default settings for avi (33kHz), unfortunately all the DVD output options are for 48kHz audio. I'm assuming the differences between the input and output rates are causing the sync issues but I never considered the lower or upper field option. Lower is the standard for dv from what I've read

My analog capture videos (Upper Field First) have perfect lip sync but a DV project has a persistent problem where audio precedes video by about one second on DVD (or .iso file) even though the video file is perfect. I have been trying to get Ulead to fix the problem.
In your case, with a slide show, you have the freedom to set the Field Order any way you want. However, if you integrate video clips later, you should set the Field Order to match the video.
