VSX4 captures but won't play back in "edit'

Post by carole12 »

Hi there,

I have encountered a rather strange problem. I am using a Firewire and have a Sony Handycam. I find that although VSX4 captures okay - that when I stop the capture and go through to 'Edit", the project playback or clip playback won't play, and yet if I use the 'scrubber' with my mouse, it plays the entire captured part.

This is a little hard to explain: what happens is during 'video capture' - VSX4 begins to capture and then the preview screen freezes. The capturing however continues, even though the preview screen has frozen. After a couple of minutes I stop the capture and go through to 'edit' but I find when I press the button to play back (either as a 'project' or 'clip') it actually stops at the part where the preview screen had frozen whilst capturing. However, if I use my mouse on the 'scrubber' line, I can view the entire capture (e.g. the part after the preview screen froze).

Not sure if I am making myself clear?

Thankyou for any help.

Sounds strange indeed. Are you capturing standard def DV or HDV via Firewire, or direct to standard def mpeg-2? Can you do any editing, or can you select Share > Create Video File and then output to DV or HDV again? If so, does that play properly and can you edit it?

Hallo,

I am capturing standard DV with the firewire. I can edit yes. I can put in transitions yes. I have tried as you mentioned, to 'share' with various settings - i.e. mpeg - DV - etc. and it renders the entire section. However, when I come to play it back - it still will not play properly. It will stop at the point where the preview screen froze on my initial capture. Once again the scrubber and mouse can view the entire project with all the edits that I did.

Thankyou for your help.

But will the new, edited and encoded file play back on any other program properly e.g. Windows Media Player or some other software player?

Hallo,

I tried the 'share' as a DVD setting, as well as mpeg setting and neither of them played in Windows Media Player. Normally they would have done. I then tried WMV as a setting and it played successfully in windows media player.

This certainly is annoying now.

Thankyou for your help.

Have you tried just playing the captured un-edited DV file on your hard drive in any other software - if yes was that the same.

Have you tried completely deleting your current project from within VideoStudio and deleting the thumbnail in the library - then importing the un-edited DV file back into VS - is that still the same ?

Have you tried capturing again as a new file - does it still happen in the new capture ?

Hallo,

Yes I have tried playing the captured un-edited DV file on my hard drive to Windows Media Player. It will not play. I only have Windows Media Player at this stage. Should I try to download Nero 9 for example to see if it might play?

(Windows Media Player did give me a message that said it might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.)

Thankyou.

Hi carole

There is an issue with the Firewire driver installed with Windows 7
Please read this post by Ken
Although you are able to capture it may be worthwhile following Kens recommendation of rolling back the driver.

Media Players, VLC is quite good and plays most formats.

Hallo,

I have taken on board all that you have said. I have set my driver to the 'legacy' one in Device Manager, but it has not helped. Nonetheless out of the blue I have noticed that my newly captured video plays in the overlay track but not in the main (the one on top) track!!!!!!!!!! It will not playback 'project' but does play back 'clip'.

Most odd to say the least. This is still no good to me though, but can anyone explain this?

I downloaded the Videolan thankyou for this, but I so want my VS4X to work. Having recently bought it, I would like to be able to capture with it.

I am going to uninstall one more time and hope for some success with the 'legacy' driver.

Many thanks.

A lot of us have also used a small freeware program called WinDV to capture DV. You can get it from www.windv.mourek.cz It normally works beautifully, and you can even set your own name for the captured files. Then once captured, you can open the files in VS for editing. But if you have the same problem as you do at the moment capturing with X4, then at least you will know there is something else apart from X4 causing the problem.

Can see if the same thing happens if you WinDV? You can download it from the http://windv.mourek.cz/

Ken beat me in the WinDV by 6 minutes. :)

Thankyou Abiel Coral NA ...... thankyou Ken.

I downloaded the Windv successfully from your link and it captures nicely. It only plays back through VLC and NOT through VS ........ :( though. I cannot play the video at all - except on the overlay track and even then, only by pushing the 'clip' selection. In other words, there is no change whatsoever from the above problem. What am I going to do?? !! I will be unable to do any editing at all.
PLEASE is there any way we can find out what on earth this problem could be? I did a clean uninstall once again, and then re-installed VS, but the same thing keeps happening.

Apart from the above which is the most important thing for me right now, could I ask if there is any way to 'split by scene' in Windv or be able to add transitions? I cannot see a place for these. If per chance I could even get VS up and running once again, if this cannot be done through windv, it would mean splitting scenes manually.

Thankyou.

Hi Carole

First Split by Scene works by default when using Win DV
The function recognises the scene changes, usually as the camera record is pressed.
However if you record say a wedding the camera will be running for a long time, there will be no scene changes.
For normal recordings the split by scene option should work.

You can split by scene after capture, right click a clip in the timeline or library and select Split by Scene

----------------------------------------------

Your problem is most annoying.
Can you right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, What are they?

Where do you live, are you in Pal or Ntsc country?

Are you able to capture a 20 second sample, using Dv-Avi should be about 70 Mb
Can you make the file available for download, we would then be able to view the file on our pc’s

If it’s faulty/corrupt then we have to look at your capture device and cables?
If it proves ok then the capture is ok and the problem is else ware.

Have you trued using a different firewire cable, just incase this one is faulty.
Are you able to use another camera, capture using firewire to your pc?
Or are you able to use a different PC to capture from your camera?

Hallo,

Thankyou to all who replied and helped so much. I really appreciate it.

Due to a problem I was having with my webcam audio as well as the bigger problem with VS, I decided to simply reinstall Windows 7. No problem as I enjoy computer work!

I hoped this might sort out my VS problem which it did!!!! I re-installed VS10+ - installed the patch - got that working nicely and then re-installed VSX4. Everything works perfectly. Captures perfectly now.
I didn't have to change to a legacy driver either. VSX4 is probably riding on the back of VS10+ as it were with regard to that issue.

Thankyou for explaining to me about WinDV which I backed up along with the VLC recommended by yourselves, but hopefully will never have to resort to using now.

Many thanks.
