VS X4 crashes when attempting audio editing

Post by Elderly Iron »

I had been given Ulead VS 9 and 10 from a friend who upgraded to X4. Having used and liked those, I tried his X4 and then downloded the trial version for myself. VS X4 is the only consumer program I can find that has audio mixing on playback, so I'm trying to do what I can to be certain that I'm getting a good product.

I make heavy use of multi-trim, speed/time lapse and audio level editing. I leave audio to the last. Due to camera changes, I began with AVI files, but now am using MPEG2, 4:3 740X480 29.97 fps with audio of 48000hz and a bit rate of 256 kbps.

I can edit project files for as long as I want to sit here doing it. Trimming, speeding up and adding as many transitions as I like within a 30 minute project. The preview playback will get a little choppy and often the audio will go out of sync, but if I close the program and re-open it, those problems will usually be corrected. Regardless of whether or not I close and re-open the program, when I begin adding soundtracks and adjust the levels, the program will inevitably pop up an error window and shut down.

I have tried doing all of the video editing and transitions, then creating a single file via "Share", closing the program, re-opening, starting a new project and bringing the new file into the timeline thinking that it wouldn't have to "remember" all the previous editing. From there I would attempt to do audio, but I get the same sesult.

I have uninstalled both all VS programs, removed all remaining folders, and re-downloaded the trial without re-installing 9 and 10. I can still open the vsp files saved in other folders, and I can still edit the video portions, but the program freezes when attempting to edit audio.

I did not have any issues with 9 or 10 until the download of X4. After x4 failed, I went back to 10, which worked for about 3 projects and then failed in the same manner, hence my reasoning for unistalling all programs.

It's almost as though this program makes a folder specifically for edit memory, and when it's full, it's full, and you don't get to edit anymore. Neither can you empty the folder. I've tried the different disc caching and acceleration options given in the manual, but nothing makes any difference.

I have several videos posted on YouTube, all of which were created with VS 9, 10 and a couple with X4. I would prefer to continue using a program that allows audion mix "on the fly". But now I can't even complete a project in VS10.

For a sample of my postings on YT go here: http://www.youtube.com/user/ElderlyIron ... DEWbdqCB4s

It's a half hour long, but shows the extensive amount of editing done to make the final product.

With best regards,

Hi Jeff
welcome to the forums

There have been some crash issues associated with QuickTime, random crashes of the program
There is a post at the top of this forum relating to earlier versions.

Installing an earlier versions have been known to cure some issues.
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=41374

Video Studio X4 provides Version 7.5.5, I would advise that you try this version.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL26

However doing so may conflict with I-Tunes, that’s if you use I Tunes???????
---------------------------------------
Audio formats, some problems associated with MP3 types, if you think this is an issue then I can only recommend converting to Wav types.

--------------
X4 and VS 10
Take care, VSP files created using X4 cannot be opened using VS10.
X4 the editing techniques are more advanced than VS10

Thank you for the reply, Trevor!

The QT link you provided is also 7.5.5. Apple now has 7.7.1. I've yet to read the thread link, but I'll go there after my download/installation is done.

I'm going to give the newest version a go and see if there are any conflicts. If so, I'll uninstall and go back to an older version as recommended. I'll post results.

Spot on about the ability to use 10 vsp files in X4, but no X4 vsp files in 10. Tried that as soon as the errors began!

All of my music soundtracks are .wav files, and what are iTunes? (just kidding... Just something I don't, and never will have...)

I tried the newest version of QuickTime with no success. I went back to 7.1 and now VS X4 won't even open. "Error #38. File corrupted or missing. Please re-install from original source. "

Obviously, it's going to load 7.5.5 again, so I'm back to square one. It created some dump files that Windows instructs to send to tech support. Although I know they're on holiday, I see no where in the tech support pages that they will enable something like that.

SO, without uninstalling X4, I think I'll try loading 7.5.5 and see if it comes back to life.

I read the "older version" post, but the link only provides a download of QT 7.6. One version higher than the X4 provided release.

Hi Jeff

Sorry reverting QT has caused you more problems.

For what its worth I am using QT 7.5.5 and like you I Tunes just don’t get installed.

You can revert VSP’s to an earlier version but X4 only goes back to X2
(save as Type in the Save As window)
X2 allows you to revert to VS10, so in theory you could revert from X4 to VS10, in stages, whether the project works correctly is another matter.

Trevor,

I think I just reverted too far for my first step. Who wants to go backwards 5 or 6 times to get the correct version? Well, that's what I'm doing now. Installing QT 7.5.5 allowed X4 to open again, but crashed 10 minutes into the audio editing...AGAIN!

Uninstalled 7.5.5 and installed the next oldest. Crash. Installed the next oldest. Crash. Installed next oldest. X4 takes 4 minutes 45 seconds to open. It's operating currently. We'll see how many edits I can get in before the next crash.

I'm getting my older versions from www.oldversion.com. More specifically, http://oldversion.com/QuickTime.html which shows all previous versions for download.

The saga continues...

Hi

QuickTime versions although have caused problems for some users may not be your problem, we need to explore the content of your project files.
MP3 Audio has also proved problematic. So if you are using MP3 audio I would suggest converting to Wav.
----------------------------------

Your project files. VSP’s
I assume the trial time will run out soon
Do you have a VSP created in X4, and wish to open in VS10?
Then provided you have only applied simple edits then It may be possible to re-save and open in VS10.
May work, not sure

I don't think so -- at least not as a direct save to VS 10 project format. With X4, you can only save back to X3 and X2 format. X2 will save back to VS 11/11.5 and VS 10 format. So if you have access to X2, you could do a two step to save it back to VS 10. But a bit of a hassle.

Just to add to trevor's suggestion.. you may also want to update the codecs on your computer, since you are using Windows XP.

Here are some of the codecs that you may want to install.
