Access to ... \Cache\LastDBTreeSel.PspCache Denied

Post by RHWoodman »

I took quite a number of photos around Christmas, and after I downloaded them to my computer, I organized them by themes for further editing and to give to friends who had requested them. I have PSPP X3 and PSP X4 both installed. Subsequent to the installation of PSP X4, I installed PC Tools Antispyware with Antivirus 2011 and PC Tools Registry Mechanic because I got hit by a Trojan hiding on a webpage, said Trojan managing to take down my then-existing antivirus software without so much as a "by your leave". After installing PC Tools, I continued to use PSP X4 and PSPP X3 and did not notice any problems (other than an installation bug about which I complained in a separate post); however, I did not use the built-in browser functions of either program.

With the download and organization of the Christmas photos, I decided to use PSP X4's "Manage" function (the browser) to review the pictures and decide which I wanted to keep. As soon as I started the browser function, I got an error message that read "Access to C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Corel PaintShop Pro\14.0\Cache\LastDBTreeSel.PspCache was denied." I had to click on the "OK" button to continue. The pictures were visible in the browser window and in the preview window, but every time I tried to move from one picture to the next, this error message popped up. Every time I tried to navigate from one folder to another, this message popped up, and I had to click "OK" each time to continue. When I finally deleted a picture, the message popped up, and when I clicked "OK", the program abruptly terminated telling me that the shutdown was unexpected and that I should contact Corel about this problem; however, no error message or error code was provided.

I thought the problem was limited to PSP X4, so I switched to PSPP X3. The problem persisted, including the unexpected shutdown with no error message or error code.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? If so, were you able to solve that problem? If you were able to solve it, what did you do? Does anyone know if there is incompatibility between PSPP X3, PSP X4, and the aforementioned PC Tools software? If an incompatibility is known, is there a workaround or a fix?

My computer runs Windows 7 Professional with all of the latest critical upgrades and most of the optional upgrades. I have 8 GB of RAM and a 250 GB SATA hard drive. My CPU is an Athlon Quad-Core. My motherboard is an ASUS. I have an NVIDIA graphics card with 2 GB of VRAM.

Any and all help is appreciated.

***** Problem Solved ... I Think *****

After browsing through the forum for awhile, I came across a suggestion to delete the Cache folder. I tried it, and PSP X4 is working. I still don't know if PC Tools might have caused the initial problem, so if anyone has any knowledge whether or not there is an incompatibility between either of the PC Tools programs I mentioned and PSPP X3 or PSP X4, please let me know.

I'm not familiar with any incompatibilities but I also steer clear of any Registry Cleaner as they have a chance of destroying things. I'll let my anti-virus deal with dangerous registry settings.

If access to the file is denied you might want to check the security settings for that folder and file listed in the error. Sometimes either because of the software or some glitch certain files, folders, or registry entries are removed from your permissions.

Have you tried running PSP as administrator to see if that does anything?

LeviFiction,

The Registry Mechanic is the program I suspect also. I've already had to tweak some its default settings so as not to lose my ability to run important programs.

I have not tried running a separate Administrator account, since the default account on this computer has Administrator privileges.

As I just posted, deleting the Cache folder allowed the program to run again. I guess that forcing PSP X4 to recreate the Cache somehow solves the problem, but I'm not sure why it should work that way. I'm not a computer program; my son and my brother both do that, and they have both told me that they often wonder at the strange things that programmers put into programs. :?

Yeah but programs always run with limited privileges even with an admin account on Vista and Windows 7. So you have to specifically tell the program to "Run As Administrator" (right-click and select it from the context menu) in order for it to run with administrator privileges.

If you could delete it, then maybe permissions weren't the issue anyway. But whatever happened to the file to forbid access from PSP was dealt with when you deleted it. PSP, upon not finding the cache, recreated it but the access issue doesn't exist with the new file because it wasn't Corel that restricted the access.

Thanks. I didn't realize that I still had limited permissions. If it happens again, I'll try running as administrator and see what happens. In the meantime, so far everything is working as it should. (fingers crossed).
