1080 avi or other formats... black border?

Post by Pnikosis »

Sorry if this has been answered before, I've tried the search function and I didn't found any topic that could help me on this issue.

I have videos from my camera at 1440x1080, and after I edit them on Videostudio x4, when I save them (using MPEG4HD or AVCHD for example), the resulting file size is larger than the original. So I decided to use an encoder such as Xvid for reducing the file size. I choose avi as the output format and then in the options I set the resolution to 1440x1080 (not listed in the standard combobox, btw) and choose Xvid as the encoder (also tried ffdshow). But the resulting video is a smaller picture with a big black border instead. Am I missing something?

For better illustrate my issue, here is an example. The top image is the original video, and at the bottom is the xvid converted video:

What am I doing wrong? The xvid video is obviously smaller (both screenshots are taken at the same window scale), and also adds these frames. The frames I guess are because the encoder tries to make the resulting video to fit the 4:3 ratio, but I don't understand why also scales down the video :(
