getting Error 38, Protexis not in Services

Post by DS GFM »

I've had VS X4 since June, and it's worked very well for me - I edited a 73-minute movie with it, which I completed in October. I hadn't used it since the end of that month, when a few days ago, I tried to click it on and received the "Error 38" message. I researched what that meant and found about Protexis. I went to look for it in Services and found out that it wasn't there anymore, although a Protexis folder still exists in Program Files. I had a virus a few weeks back and I think that in removing it, Protexis may have been affected. The e-mail from tech support said I should do a clean reinstall, but i'm concerned that that my delete my existing Project files. Please advise, thanks

When you do a clean reinstall, it will first ask you to uninstall the current installation, and there will be a question asked by that routine whether you want all your personal settings also removed. Click No on that one.

But if you are worried about your project files, I don't think the uninstall/reinstall will necessarily remove them. It certainly won't affect the video that is in them. But just track down the VSP file and make a backup just in case. That way, if they do in fact disappear, you can always reinstall them in the same place so that the reinstalled VS can easily find them.

Just on the Protexis side of things, I have two running in my Services installed by different Corel programs, and I am no longer sure which one runs X4. One has the name 'PSI_SVC_2 and descriptor 'Protexis Licensing V2'. The other is 'ProtexisLicensing' with the descriptor being identical to that.

Neither of those were in Services, so I went ahead and did the reinstall. My Projects weren't affected, but all of the old Folders are gone. Is there any way to recover those?

Hi

What do you actually mean by “old folders”

Are you referring to the library content, that is lack of library content.
Video Studio may have come with a “Contents file” running this installs further templates and samples to the program, effectively completing the installation.

VS X4 downloaded files

Hi

I can only comment on the download version of Video Studio.
This came in three parts, why? I assume because of the file sizes and download times.

The main program, probably the trial file
VSX4_Pro_TBYB.exe (780Mb)

The Bonus file provides free software and samples, where applicable.
VSX4_Pro_Bonus.exe (47 Mb)

The Contents file, double click will automatically install templates/ files to the library, completing the installation.
VSX4_Content.exe (472 Mb)

Yes, the download version is what I have. Where can I find these links? The titles I created are still there, but there are no folders in the Library

Hi

Are you saying there are no clips at all available in the library.
The initial installation should provide a limited content to the library.
Go to Settings -- Library Manager—Reset Library-this should restore the library to the initial installed state.
---------------------------------------
After purchasing the program you will have received e-mails containing details to download the files.
They should have also sent activation codes, serial numbers.

Check your e-mails and junk folders.

If you log-on to your account on the Corel site you should be able to view the details of the sale, If recent the download links should be available.

What I would like to recover is all the old library folders I made when putting together my previous projects. They all disappeared when I reinstalled.

Hi

Sorry but I think the original library has been replaced when re-installing.

Before uninstalling X4
If you had used the library manager to export the old library then you would have a copy and able to import again after installation of X4.

Not the end of the world though, you have only lost the library, your project files will still be intact with your projects working correctly.

Right, it's not that big a deal, just a little inconvenient. I never exported the old library because I didn't know I would eventually get error 38. But thanks
