Paint Shop Pro (6.00) - 6.02 patch updated

Post by evalid »

I bought Paint Shop Pro (6.00) a few years ago, and I installed it just fine on Windows 7, but when I go to click on it, it comes up, but a small message comes with it saying "Failed to update the system registry, please try using REGEDIT." Then I click OK and the message goes away. But I would like to get it right. Could you please tell me where I can download the 6.02 patch (psp602up) updated? Please send me the download updated URL. Or tell me how to fix the message error. Thanks.

I don't think you are going to have much luck finding the patch. I think version 6 was well before Corel took it over from Jasc. While they maintained update patches for all earlier version for a long time, recently Corel has dumped access to older patches for its products. This was certainly the case with Corel Video Studio too, when now you can only find patches going back to version X2, I think it is. I have kept some update patches for earlier versions of VS and have been able to help users with those patches. But I have only recently come to PSP, so have no patches for it at all except those currently available on the Corel.com website. Perhaps you might be lucky, though, and another user might just have their own collection of now very old patches.

Secondly, I am vaguely surprised that version 6 works at all on Win 7, given that the most recent version is X4 (14)... But I guess stranger things have happened.

I have run across this error message in another (non-PSP) old program, both on Windows XP and Windows 7. That program was written for Windows 3.1 and kinda/sorta updated for Windows 95. I was able to track this error message down to the program attempting to write to an area of the registry to which it didn't have access. Back in the 3.1/95 days of Windows, all programs had unrestricted access to the registry. Because PSP 6 came out in the Windows 98 days, prior to Windows 2000, it is likely in the same boat; it is probably assuming it has unrestricted access to the registry.

As it turns out, my old program in question was trying to update part of the registry it didn't need to update (and that it had no business updating), though I'm not sure why. It will work properly after dismissing the error dialog. When running as an administrative user (not recommended), the error doesn't occur.

Another thing, I notice that you are using Windows 7 and PSP 6.0? Since PSP 6 is not compatible with Windows 7, you may encounter other problems in the future.
