How can I create an image of a DOT to add to another image

I have an image of a map and want to create a number of individual images of that map each with a large white dot with a black edge (to highlight different cities).
I have created a separate image of the dot using both transparent background and normal background and then attempted to use EDIT>COPY the image of the dot and then EDIT>PASTE to the image of the map but no matter which PASTE option I use I cannot achieve what I want to.


Also (different problem) I lost my MATERIAL PALETTE. I noted that to restore it I could use VIEW>PALETTES and select MATERIALS but it was already selected. I also used the F6 key without success. I had to start PSP by pressing the SHIFT key when I started it to restore PSP to its defaults and then I could select and display it. So what stopped me from displaying it in the first place?

Could you explain your first problem a bit more? I'm afraid I don't understand. Once you paste the dot onto the map (as a new layer) you can then grab the dot and move it wherever you want.

Or are you saying that the dot doesn't paste in with the transparency or something like that?

My suggestion is to use the ellipse tool and just create a vector circle. The black edge could be the stroke and the white could be the fill. You can then draw it anywhere on the map you want and don't have to deal with copying and pasting separate images.


As for the materials palette, it sounds like it was shrunk too small to see (which can happen randomly if you're not careful, especially with a touchpad on a laptop) or there was a glitch with the workspace which does happen from time to time.

Regarding the first problem.
My image of the dot is a 200x200 pixel image and I have created the DOT by using the 'paintbrush' to 'deposit' a black dot in the centre and then using the 'paintbrush' to deposit a smaller white dot in the center of the black dot making a white dot with a black edge. I have tried different colors as the background including starting with a transparent background.

The problem I am having trying to copy the image of the dot to the image of the map is that when I paste the image of the dot I either get the dot to appear ok BUT also with the background OR I get the dot appearing ok but the central white turns out to be transparent.

I want to create many copied of my map each with my dot at a different city. I will then use the image in a video production I am creating.
I just wanted to make it easier by not having to manually create my dot on each image (and just cut and paste a prepared dot).
I know that I can create the dot manually on each different image but thought there would be an easier way.

The only reason I can think of for the white portion being transparent is if you used "Paste as Transparent Selection" and had the background color set to "White."

"Paste as Transparent Selection" uses the current background color to mask out areas from what you're pasting in.

But by using the simple and straight forward "Paste as New Layer" option I can get mine to paste just fine. Though the layer must have the transparent background before you do the copy.

Again my suggestion for you is either make the dot on its own layer or use the Ellipse tool. You should be able, unless you have a soft edge on your brush, to replicate the same look by using a thick border. You can then move the dot anywhere on the layer above the map and save out the result.

Couldn't you draw the image that you want deposited on a transparent background then Export it as a Picture Tube?

PROBLEM SOLVED (and I don't know how).

I have overcome my problem and I don't know how as I just tried again -

created a new image (300 x 300 pixels) with a transparent background, created a 100 pixel diameter black dot using the paint brush, added a 80 pixel white dot in the center of the black dot, clicked on EDIT?>COPY, moved to my map image and selected EDIT>PASTE AS A NEW SELECTION and it worked - why didn't that work for me the other day?

Thanks for everyone's input. And I still don't know why it wouldn't work the other day.
