Pal to NTSC

Post by SandyW »

The problem in short is this... I create DVD's primarily in PAL format and I have created a project in VS9 that has been edited to a large extent with transitions etc added, I now need to create this same project to be viewed in the US ie NTSC format rather than PAL.

I transfer the footage via firewire to my PC in DV format useing Ulead VS9 Capture. Under 'Capture' the area to change the frame rate defaults to 25 fps and is greyed out so I don't have an option to change this.

Having captured the footage, edited etc I then go to 'Share' and was hoping that I could select NTSC but the only options I get are Pal, not to be stumped I went into options and tried to change the frame rate from 25fps to 29.97 but it gave an error indicating that this wasn't possible.

I have a Sony camera which has the following model number written on it, DCR-PC101E PAL, I am getting confused with the fact that it has 'PAL' written on it and thinking that maybe this is the format that the tape is filmed in, although I don't think so.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you have a PAL camcorder, which records in PAL DV format, which uses a framerate of 25fps. Since capturing from a DV device is really just a binary data transfer, you don't get to adjust any parameters at this point.

However, once you have the video on your PC, it can be transcoded to NTSC-compliant MPEG format for eventual burning to a NTSC DVD. The best way to do this is to use the "Create Video File" option, selecting "Custom" for the format, and then MPEG for the file type. Next, click on the "Options" button, then the "Compression" tab, and specify NTSC DVD for the Media Type.

Once you have the videos in NTSC MPEG format, follow the guidelines in the top thread of the forum.
