X4 - VSP loads 99%, then fails (tried on multiple computers)

- I have a single VSP that fails every time I try to start it. I get the following error: "The Program has encountered an unspecified error and has stopped functioning. Please contact the Corel Technical Support and send the dump file for analysis." Then it gives me the location of the dump file.
- I have tried this on both my main computer, running Windows 7 and my old Vista machine.
- My Vista machine gives me an error (full code shown at bottom of post) having to do with the HerDocdll.dll.
- My wife and I have worked for hours on this video and were almost finished. It is for our family for Christmas, and I REALLY don't want to start over. I would appreciate any help that can be provided.

- I've looked and don't find anyone else with this problem, so I hope this isn't a double post.

This was normally run from a Western Digital external 1TB hard drive, but I've recently moved everything to the HD on my Windows 7 machine, to no avail.

The Version of program being used: X4, version 14.0.0.342

Details of the source files.
- Most of the source files are pictures, with a few videos. I haven't had this problem before, though I use like pictures and videos in all my files. I can open every other file I'm working on - 15 currently, with no issues whatsoever. Only this single file is having the problem. I can list the specifics of the files we use, but surely that isn't the problem since they still open and function...

Did this error occur at the SHARE?
- No! This error occurs before the file will open. If I open VS X4 directly, then it works fine. When I attempt to open my "corrupt" file, then the program crashes at 99% of loading. If I double click the file to open it directly, then it still crashes at 99%.

With that version number, it does not look as though you have applied the update service packs.

Apparently, that is correct. I have been using the in-program "check for update" feature. I didn't realize it, but that function must not provide Service Pack updates.
I went to the website and downloaded/installed SP1 and SP2. Thanks for the info Ken, but I'm still having the same issue.

Disclaimer-
I know nothing and, have only poked around in VSP-X4 while dallying around looking for a low bidder computer that meets specs. However, I did manage to get my copy of the program to crash every time I opened it early on. The cause seemed to be an error in the Thumbs file indexing or in the directory path???

If you can isolate the image thumbs file directory, perhaps you could temporarily rename it to see if the project will at least open on one of the computers. Sounds like you already have enough backups for that not to be a problem.

Nope, it only happens with that file. I did download all of the updates manually, thanks for that.
I tried attaching the file, but it is slightly too large. Maybe if someone is willing to have me email it directly to them, they could try to open it?
I didn't see anything about that in the rules, am I breaking any by asking?

If I am still understanding you correctly, the file in question is VSP and not a specific video file. If that is so, then there is little chance of your being able to send it to us with any effect, I'm sorry to say. A VSP is not a video file. It is the project file, and is only a small text file which tells Video Studio what videos, images, effects, audio etc are in the project, where they are all stored on the computer, and what editing has been done to them.

In other words, to be able to perhaps detect what is wrong, we need not only the VSP, but all the files in the project. While VS has a SmartPackage function which will bundle everything together, I suspect it will all be too huge for any possibility of sending it as an attachment to an email.

You are correct, the VSP is only 2.5MB (this site upload max is 2 MB). My pictures and video files are 3.4 GB.
When I moved the VSP to my secondary computer, I didn't bring the accompanying files. I chose to cancel the links and "broke" them all. I had the same exact error at 99% and the file wouldn't open. I was wondering if someone who could solve the issue might try the same thing to see if they had a similar effect. My hope would be that they could open the file, even though none of the links would be working...

I'm afraid that the file also stops at 99% for me too. I tried it a couple of times on two different computers with X4 Ultimate and got the same unspecified error message. Not sure where to take it from here but there is clearly something right at the very end which VS doesn't like...

I don't suppose you saved multiple copies of your project under different names as you built it up? Some of us here do that to avoid having to start over from scratch if something like this happens, or even just to be able to quickly revert to an effect we preferred but then changed in later versions of the project... But such advice is not much use after the event, I realise...

I also had the same problem, I tried to burn a DVD and it failed at 99%, luckily I still have VSX2 in my computer. After a three tries in VSX4 I saved the project as VXS2 file, then opened VXS2 and was able to burn the DVD on the first try.
