VS4 & GoPro 1080p editing incredibly SLOW!

Post by matd »

Hi,

I'm trying VS4 and some of my full HD videos.

It's appaulingly slow when trying to work, edit and playback full HD 1080p GoPro Hero 2 mp4 files.

Also when addding another GoPro mp4 1080 clip the program lags playback for ages, making editing a complete nightmare!! Theres no warning or prompt that warns you to wait, i presume the lag and delay is caused by this smart proxy creating a lower res clip for you to watch?

I have a Pentium Quad Core 2.4GHz, 8GB DDR2 RAM, Geforce 8800 GTX 768MB and a OCZ Vertex 3 SSD - not what i would consider poor peformance at all, but yet VS4 is really struggling to work with these files - why??

Windows Live Movie Maker didnt struggle at all, only when trying to compile the finished video whereby it would usually crash, but the editing was fine.

What exactly is the problem with 1080 mp4 in VS4?

I really dont get it. VS4 looks great but at the moment is completely useless to me working with GoPro videos. If a basic crappy program like Windows Live Movier maker could work with the files without any delay or lag why cant VS4???

Smart proxy is enabled, but should it need to be with my pc spec when the videos played back via windows media player are smooth?

Its also weird that considering the processor and gfx card i have, i can't enable hardware acceleration under the performance tab of the programs options? Whats required to enable full hardware acceleration options in VS4?

At this time and even after trying the GoPro fix (Gopro mp4 hotfix.zip) working with GoPro videos is next to impossible, and this was the only reason for me getting this highly recommended software! Not impressed!

If the GoPro produces full 1920 x 1080 mpeg-4 at a fully progressive 50/60 frames per second, then I am afraid that X4 cannot handle it properly. At best, it will drop every second frame. But it will work correctly if output is set to 1280 x 720p. See http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 56#p235156 Otherwise, it can only output full 1080p video using .avi as the general wrapper format, then selecting one of the configurable codecs listed under that format.

It's actually only 25fps at 1920 x 1080

I think i can see what the problem is. I'm compiling a video and adding a GoPro mp4 on the the end of each clip and editing. If i try and edit the last clip that i've just added too quickly that is when the playback becomes jerky and the program starts to stick. If i wait a few minutes everything is fine.

If this is the smart proxy making a low res copy of the clip i've just added why isn't there at least a warning and at best a progress indicator showing you how long is needed before you can actually start the editing process?

Now i can work around the problem its not so bad, but some clue as to why it was happening or if VS4 could allow you to get on with editing whilst a smart proxy is working would be ideal....
