Re: DEFAULT SETTINGS?
Technically you should be able to go File -> Preferences -> File Format Associations
But if that doesn't work then you either have to right-click on each image type and tell it to always open with a different program or go to your Windows Control Panel and select the option for "Default Programs" and change which file types are associated with PSP.

Re: DEFAULT SETTINGS?
Why don't you go into your other program and try setting it's preferences to be the default program? That's how PSP did it, the other program will likely be able too as well.
I don't remember XP, but in Vista and Win7 you can go to the Control Panel and you'd have to set ever file type, and every iteration there of, to your other program. .jpg, .jpeg, .Jpeg, .JPG, .JPEG, .nef, .Tif, .tif, .Tiff, .tiff, etc..... one by one.

Re: DEFAULT SETTINGS?
If you right-click the icon for any Bridge document (Shift+Right-click may also work), select "Open With" > Choose Program. You should then be able to choose a program from a scrolling list, or if not shown click the browse button to locate the program you'd rather use. Be sure the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked and that should do it.
If you don't see an "Open With" option in your right-click menu, you may want to disassociate all applications from a particular file extension. To disconnect the association entirely, open My Computer, then from the menu select Tools > Folder Options >File Types tab. Scroll down to the file extension for the file opening in PSP, click it to highlight it, then click the Delete button to delete it from the list. Click OK. The icon for the "bridge" document will revert to the default Windows standard icon. Then retry the process in the first paragraph. This has worked for us many times.
Best regards.
