PaintShop X4 keeps crashing after most recent update

Post by beate »

I have not had any trouble with the newest version of PaintShop until the most recent update that was automatically downloaded and installed.

Now I am encountering this series of events.
1) working on a picture in .pspimage format
2) opening a second picture that I want to insert as a layer into my main image
3) I work on the second picture, then crop it and add is as a new layer to my main image; I move the picture around where I want it using the pick tool (this is important since the pick tool is selected before step 4)
4) I close the second image, then open another image that I want to insert as another layer
5) I can use anything in the menus at the top (File, Edit, View, etc.), however whenever I choose one of the tools on the left (crop, perspective correction, etc.), PaintShop Pro crashes with this message:
Unhandled exception in ExitInstance, code=110, what =
The attempted operation is not valid in the current program state.
I only get the option to click OK and PaintShopPro exits.

All these steps used to work just fine prior to the last update. Is there any way I can go back to the prior version if there is no solution for this problem? Interestingly, if I select a tool different from the Pick Tool after step 3 above, I can avoid the crash, but this is clumsy, and I do not always remember to select something besides the Pick tool before opening another image.

I appreciate your feedback!

If you want to revert to a previous version a reinstall will be in order. How easy a reinstall really is remains to be seen, but I've done it and it was far less of a pain than PSP X3 reinstalling.

After I encountered error 1404 as well, I did end up un-installing and re-installing; now I have to tell it every 7 days that I do not want to install the service pack :) I still am concerned about these errors and wonder what the problem is that is introduced by the service pack.

I'd be interested to know if you are working with 8 bit or 16 bit images.

8 bit image.

And unfortunately even after doing a fresh install, PaintShop X4 gives me the same trouble even though I took care to not install the service pack. So there is some other conflict now.

Any suggestions are so welcome, I cannot work with the program at all any more, I have to constantly close it and re-open it each time I add the second new layer during one session (the first new image can always be added without a problem, but the second one will result in my original problem, i.e., selecting any tool below the Pick Tool will lead to error an error and PaintShop X4 quits). I do install all Windows updates, don't know whether any of those might affect PS.

BTW, the images I am adding as layers are all in RAW (even though I have worked on several large projects involving 30+ layers without any problems back in October).

What an enormous disappointment, after using PaintShop for 12+ years I think I am finally giving the competition more thought even though it's much more expensive. I did not upgrade to X3 since X2 gave me trouble, my hopes after initially using X4 are all but extinguished.
