When I downloaded the try-before-you-buy version of VSX4 from Corel.com the only option offered was to use their installer. Apparently it's the Akamai installer. Upon some googling around it's, among other things, a peer to peer network intended for speeding up downloads. Files are kept on mine and others computers, if the parent computer asks for it my computer complies and mine and others computers all jump in and send the files requested. I really don't like that my firewall is asking if I want to allow this program access repeatedly. I tried killing the process under Task Manager and it opened itself again. After multiple kills it's dormant for now but the more I look into it the more I'm concerned. The program's name is netsession_win.exe and it has apparently accessed the web a couple of hundred times over the past week before I became aware of it.
I know this is a related topic as the two folders for Akamai are
C:\Users\64_Dan\AppData\Local\Akamai\Cache\www.corel.com\akdlm\6763\downloads\trials\videostudiox4\pro\tbyb
C:\Users\64_Dan\AppData\Local\Akamai\Cache\www.corel.com\akdlm\6763\downloads\trials\winzip\15
Anyways, has anyone come across this? Can I remove it safely?
Will disabling the Akamai Installer hurt VSX4?

Re: Will disabling the Akamai Installer hurt VSX4?
I've noticed it on my main video editing computer (as per my Profile), and like you was initially mystified until I found it was the Corel downloader. I confess to being lazy and have not sought to remove it.
Interestingly enough, I have just done a search on my alternate computer, which has a number of Corel products on it -- VS X4, X3 and X2; PSP X4; and WinZip 15.5. However, none of these were installed from a direct Corel download, though several of them were originally downloads on the other computer, and the installation files merely copied to a USB stick drive for installation on the other computer. And that computer appears to be free of Akamai. All programs moreover work correctly. So I would have to conclude that once you have installed a program, it would be safe to remove Akamai.
Mind you, why it has to stay resident in the first place, instead of being removed as a Temp file upon completion of installation, is something we would need to ask Corel.

You can remove Akamai without any problem and it will not affect the install corel program on your computer.

Thanks Abiel, I was hoping you'd say something like that.
I for one think that it's kind of rotten that you've gotta download that thing to TBYB, but if you can uninstall afterwords that takes a lot of the sting out of it.
