I thought i'd share this with you because i've been using it a bit lately to remove the detail from images and make them into posters. like to make a building look generic rather than like a specific building.
and i use it cos it's so simple.
just duplicate a layer, change the layer mode to darken, select the bottom layer and apply a Gaussian blur of about 6, depending on the res of the image. darken selects the darkest bits of either layer, so it doesn't really matter which way around you have them. by blurring one layer the dark boundaries are highlighted from the other layer are shown.
the picture of summer glau above is not really a great example. but it conveys the idea.
