How to create long fade transition?

Tring to edit an 8 to 10 second fade from black to a clip. I know it sounds simple, but I have exhausted all sources for help.

The closest I can get is this:
Black color, Crossfade Transition, Video Clip This would work, but transitions are limited to 3 seconds...

Am I missing something easy somewhere? If so, sorry for the dumb question.

Also, is there a way to freez a video for a defined amount of time? I know inserting a capture of the last frame as a still image would work, but seems like a bit of extra work..

You can make the transition as long as you like - put the transition in the timeline and click on it - yellow 'handles' will appear each end - move the cursor over the right hand one and it will change to a two headed arrow - now left click and hold while you drag to the right to any length you want. you can also do it my changing the time in the options panel. Yours all come in at 3 seconds because that is what you have set in 'Preferences' - if you want a longer default go to preferences and change it.

I now see my error..

The said transition is limited also by the length of the clip it is joining. I dropped in a 3 second black color clip, and it would only allow for 3 seconds of transition. Makes sense now, I just couldn't see my mistake..
