Video format

Post by interadd »

Hi guys

New to this video editing game, just have a question regarding 4.3 and 16.9. i have a Canon XM2 which has a setting in the menu for 16.9 wide screen format. When this is selected on the camera the view finder shows a distored image (squshed). I have also found a setting that when 16.9 is turned off you can display 2 horizontal lines on the display. my question is am i better off shooting footage with the 16.9 turned off on the camera and then using Videostudio pro x4 to create the 16.9 format(if this can be done).

Sorry if this seems to be a bit of a stupid question but i am not sure what to do.

Thanks in advance

Tim
Thanks

Hi Tim

You are best to set 16:9 on the camera, the cameras display may show the video as distorted, I have a Panasonic GS 400 and shows the same as you describe. This is not a problem.

Your camera is a Mini DV type and records video to DV-Avi probably the best format for standard definition.

When you capture you should connect the camera via firewire, selecting DV as the capture format.
Your video footage will be transferred to the pc without re-coding, The video aspect ratio will display correctly in Video Studio.

View my quick Guide to DV-Avi, although written for earlier versions of VS, is still applicable for the latest versions. http://lata.me.uk/video_studio/guides/q ... de_avi.htm
Simply shows a workflow in list form….

There is also a free capture program called Win DV, this program allows you to name the captured files which I find useful.
As I said the video is transferred without re-coding, what you have in the camera is what you get on the pc, DV-Avi.
