VSP file keeps freezing

Post by FreoFan »

In VSX4, a particular VSP file is freezing but other VSP’s can be edited without problem.
It freezes during playback of the project, and individual scenes - audio and video. I have deleted individual clips - but it freezes at a different clip or at a different place entirely. I can play the first 17 minutes or so, but then it freezes. If I restart the program and play at any point after the 17 minute mark it freezes, sometimes immediately other times after a few munutes. Even scrolling after the 17 minute mark sometimes triggers it.
I have put a few hours into this project and would prefer not to start again, if at all possible.

The message is:
“Corel VS Pro has stopped working”.
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

To try and resolve this I have:

Uninstalled and reinstalled VSX4 Pro

Updated to SP2

Updated QT and Direct X

System Restore

Full system scan

I am at the limit of my knowledge and need help.

Project Details:
From camcorder using EasyCap
PAL (25 fps)

Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

you have told us what your project details are - but not what the properties of the video file are. Please put the video file into the timeline of VideoStudio and select it - now RIGHT click and from the pop out choose 'Properties' - please copy those properties and post them here.

Sorry for the delay in my response, I was waiting for email notification and none came.
In the meantime, I have isolated the problem to a certain type of audio file that is causing the conflict. The recently uploaded batch of cassete tapes using Audiograb and converting to MP3 with LAME, a method I've used successfully before, all seem to be conflicting.
As far as I know, I used all the same settings as before so am left puzzled. :?:

Video File

MPEG 2 Video
24 bit 352x288 4:3
25 fps
Variable bit rate (3000 kbps)
Dolby Digital Audio
48000 Hz
no Layers
384 kbps

Audio File

MPEG Audio layer 3 files
44100Hz 16 bit joint stereo
3 Layers
176Kpbs

Hi FreoFan

Your video file
The properties are using a small frame size, (half D—352 x 288) for standard Pal DVD the size would be 720 x 576.
Typical Mpeg2 capture settings would be:-

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First (for the internet use Frame Based)
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 5000 kbps
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Quick Time
Has caused some crashes in the past .
Revert Quick time to an earlier version, X4 provides QT 7.5.5

Thanks, I didn't realise you had to press the subscribe button that's all.

As far as changing QT, I'll leave that until there's another problem as everything is working well, at the moment, if I don't use those audio files

What is the consequece of having a half frame size? grainier or less
Did I select something wrong when capturing them?
is there anything that can be done apart from recapturing?

Hi

If you are intending to burn a DVD at full quality then you will have to use 720 x 576, using a smaller frame size I assume will reduce the quality, I must admit I have never used smaller frame sizes.

If you used Video Studio to capture via the easycap device, then X4's default template (DVD Pal AC3 EP) uses 352 x 288. at 3000kbps.
I have to say that Corel have removed the manual capture settings that earlier versions allows, so we are left with choosing a preset template.
5000kbps would be quite suitable for analogue VHS capture as I mentioned earlier, unfortunately not available in X4.
Select the DVD Pal AC3 GQ will capture to 720 x 576 using 8000kbps, This is suitable for standard DVD for 60 minutes play time.
The bit rate (Data Rate) controls the quality and size of the file.
4000kbps will give 120 minutes to a disc at VHS quality.
8000kbps will give 60 minutes on disc at full DVD quality

Easycap
I assume you are not having problems, however there have been some fake devices sold on the internet.
There is a post at the top of this forum regarding Ezcap/Easycap

So if I understand correctly, I did nothing wrong other than leave VSX4 on the default setting, when capturing the VHS, which imports at half size.
There is no solution other than recapture – 40 hours of video tape!

Hi

Wow 40 hours,

Can we assume that Video Studio X4 came with the capture device, or did you receive other software.
I have the Ezcap device that came with capture software Showbiz DVD2, this allows you to set the capture properties.

You could try creating/burning a disc to view the quality, you will also be able to check the amount you can get on disc, at 3000 kbps probably 200 minutes, just a guess.
I must admit I have never burner a disc with half frame size?

If the quality is not acceptable, try rendering the video to full frame 720 x 576.
Run a few tests on say 15 minutes of video.
Creating a DVD Folder rather than actually burning the disc will save on coasters

If you recapture using X4 to full quality at 8000kbps, you will only fit 60 minutes to disc.
I’m sure you would want more minutes and re-code the video again.

no I bought the VSX4 separately because the other program was too basic.
I have just rendered at 720x576 and got almost 2 hours onto a dual layer DVD and used 7.24 GB.
The quality is OK compared to 1990 VHS standards as opposed to todays HD standard and good enough for this project.
thanks once again for your help
