a different color workspace? I can't find it for the life of me.

Click View and it will be at the bottom of the menu.

Just out of interest where did you get your X4 from..
because I have a friend who bought the cd 2 weeks a go from a shop..
she is having problems installing the update .it tells her it has updated
but hasn't she still has version 14.0.0.332..
it has me baffled...Cheers

Perhaps you should ask your friend to join these forums and ask her question direct - it is quite possible another member will be able to help.
