I can't find an easy, out-of-the-box way to create a 1920x1080 file from my clips. My clips are shot in HD (1080p) and I can output in 1080 via .mp4, but not .avi. I've been producing in .mp4 and converting through an external tool to .avi, but quality is lost a bit.
What's the best way?
I tried using "custom" and user-defined resolution, but the file size was enormous and didn't playback correctly in WMP. When I select the compression types, it locks out user-defined resolutions. What am I missing?

Using any of the preset configuration via SHARE > CREAT VIDEO FILE. You cannot find an .AVI at 1920x1080. You can however create your own movie template. Just click on SETTINGS > MAKE MOVIE TEMPLATES MANAGER . Click on NEW then on the TEMPLATE OPTIONS just select USER-DEFINED under the FRAME SIZE.
After saving the Template, you should see the movie template that you created at the bottom of the menu when you click SHARE > CREAT VIDEO FILE.
Here's the property of the video that I created using the test template that I created.

I convert all my HD files to Avi using the superb SQUARED 5 Mpeg Streamclip software (available as a free download online).
Open Squared 5.
Click on "File".
Open the video file you need to convert.
Click on "Export to AVi".
A main box will open providing you with a host of alternative options to convert your video file to Avi, at various quality settings from 0-100%, and different mpeg layers, stereo quality options, and interlaced or progressive.
The batch option is also great, because it allows you to convert many video clips at once.
When you have converted the clips to Avi, then simply load them back into your Videostudio library.
Squared 5 will also convert your video clips to many other types of video file using the"Export to" options.

Hi
As another option you could try Div X
Example………
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
Frame-based
DivX 6.9.2 Codec (4 Logical CPUs)
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Again use Make Movie Templates Manager—User Define to set the frame size
