Hi Bill

In the name of shall we say improvements Corel have designed X4 to use 16:9 as the default aspect ratio.
After all most video now uses 16:9
Change this from Settings, deselecting Widescreen 16:9. Unfortunately you have to do this for each new project.

There are things you can do that may help……….
Now this depends your video files properties, if compliant will work quite well.

Go to Preferences (F6)
Tick Show Messages when Inserting the First Video ……..
Start a new project
Add one of your video files, if you get a popup window referring to matching the project properties, view the details in the right-hand panel, these are your video files properties, now select Yes.
Hopefully that will do it for you

If that approach does not work then you could create a blank 4:3 project. Save it as say My 4:3 template.
Opening this when you are starting your next video, remember to re-save it giving it a name relating to your movie.

don't see a way to select templates in the capture options area. As for the default settings being 16x9 - this is really annoying - at least to me, my projects are all based on old movies - all of wich are NOT 16x9 - but all of the suggestions seem to be more involved than just turning off the 16x9 every single time I start a new project - so I'm going to stick with this.
but why did they make something less funtional? and why would I care that most people use 16x9 (not sure why this became my problem)

Programmers write the way they think is best but it is not always the best . With Pinnacle Studio, from V14, have a simmilar issue. The aspect ratio always defaults to 4:3 unlike older versions wher it is kept as set by the user untill changed.
I my case I can never get the capture window to maitain a 16:9 AR.
You can change to 4:3 AR if you set a template here and remove the setting 16:9 in the menu.
