Try creating a new account on your computer with administration rights and install on that account. If it works you can use PSP on your other accounts and can even delete the new account. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

@ Robolovsky:
At least some good news on my computer. The additional icons of the toolbars disappear only the first time when you change from Edit mode to Manage mode and back.
Try a second time: Just put in 2 or 3 additional icons into the toolbars of the Edit screen, switch from Edit back to Manage mode, change there to Thumbnail view and close the Preview bar on the right side of the screen. Select some photos and hit Edit. You'll be taken to the Edit screen and the icons of the toolbars are still there.

BUT ...
It won't work in Dual Monitor view. So you are stuck with one monitor. But in Dual Monitor view you can't change into Thumbnail view anyway like it was in PsP X2.

And you'll have to be extremely careful with the Crop tool in the Edit pane in Cascade view. You have to remember to switch back from Crop to Pan Tool each time you are done with one photo. If you forgot and click on another photo the whole screen changes to Tabbed view again.

Do hope that Corel are planning to release that 2nd service pack sometime soon.

This may have been mentioned before but just in case... there is a problem with the transparency function in the .GIF optimiser.

Using a simple 2 colour GIF file, black and white, dropped into GIF optimiser with white selected as the transparent colour. Save the file and try using it on a web page or similar, no transparency.

Put the same file into X3 and carry out the same procedure et voila, one transparent GIF.

@Robolovsky :: The Gif transparency problem has been reported as bug a while ago.
I work for the Corel UK Support. I will not give technical support through this forum and my answer is only related to this thread.

Hello, I would like to report a bug/issue with my Digital Noise Removal. I had not been having a problem with it until a few months ago when I started taking more silhouette photos.

Here's the deal:
I edit the photo as desired to have nice contrast and color, yet when I put up the noise removal screen (I like to do this last), these huge white or black blocks appear on the file. I do not understand why this happens, surely it can't just be that there is a lot of the same color? That would make the whole thing go white, not just a small part. I can fix it by not using the Noise Removal sharpening option at all (even at 1.0 it makes them) and use High Pass sharpening, but it doesn't get the same affect I want.
I have found out that by using the correction blend by itself first, then opening Noise Removal again to use the sharpening, changes the size of the black or white boxes - sometimes to a small enough size to where I am able to just Clone Brush them out. But as you can see in this photo, those are too large to brush out without changing the shape of the tree.

Help? I love taking silhouette shots and this keeps happening (ONLY on high contrasts like this, btw).

Just an additional note to my last message, but I'm seeing the same affect for the sharpening in the noise removal even in the PaintShop HDR Merge part of it, so same problem, just different place.

Any fixes for this would be greatly appreciated, and I can't think that everyone could be having this problem. Maybe I need to download some kind of service pack?

Once again I am not sure if this has been spotted but has anyone noticed a considerable reduction in quality resulting from saving an image in the JPG optimizer when compared to similar settings in X3. In the examples below the first has been saved in X3 and the second one in X4. The settings in the JPG optimizer were the same for each one i.e. compression value = 10 and subsampling = none. As you can see there are considerably more artifacts on the second one. The file size is also smaller. I guess a workaround would be to set the compression value even lower but I always found 10 to be about right previously.

Further to my previous post i have now played around with the JPG optimiser settings and have found that even when set to a compression value of 1 the image is still poor quality.

However if I set the subsampling to YCbCr 4x4 2x2 2x2 and go back to my original compression value of 10 there is a noticeable improvement.
Image4.jpg

Indeed the image is now on a par with the X3 version and is virtually the same file size.

Is this a bug or can someone explain what is happening? I'm figuring it is a bug because, by rights, the subsampling on that setting would normally decrease the quality significantly. In fact I would go further and say that what is actually happening is that when the subsampling is set to none there is in reality still some subsampling going on. However when the setting is moved to YCbCr 4x4 2x2 2x2 there is actually no subsampling happening. The bug therefore is in the subsampling settings.

New JPG engine. So not a bug, just different. Takes some playing around to get the new right settings.

Still seems odd though. How can you have worse quality with no subsampling and best quality with maximum subsampling? Doesn't make any sense!

This procedure causes PSP X4 14.1.0.5 to freeze...

1. In PSP's Manage mode, open the Computer tab and select any folder of images.
2. Using Windows Explorer, rename another folder of images (a folder that is currently displayed by PSP).
3. In PSP, select the folder you just renamed (PSP is still showing the old name).

The only way out of this is shutdown PSP in Task Manager.

PSP X4 new problem: image sizes in the print window do not reflect an applied change to the printer paper size until I open and apply the printer properties settings a second time.

This has been reported by multiple users, with Epson and Canon printers.

Sometimes? always? using "Image" -> "Canvas Size" to increase my image, I update one dimension, with "lock aspect ratio" ON and this fails to increase the other dimension. Instead the last remembered setting is used.

This becomes very obvious when it actually crops the image on that dimension!

I have to uncheck, then re-check "lock aspect ratio" to see the other dimension updated.

P.S. this is NOT a FEATURE...

The text tool problem has been logged as bug in X3 and X4, but can't be solved in X4 unfortunately.
It's this bug alone that stops me from purchasing X3 and X4(and continuing to use X2), due entirely to how annoying it is that something that worked for years suddenly broke and there's no easy workaround for.

As a programmer, I'd really like to know why this can't be solved with a patch. Software shouldn't be released for sale when there's still known bugs to common use cases in the wild. There should be regression tests in place to ensure that this bug never pops up.

Hear, hear! Frankly the X4 program is a mess and we all know it. When are they ever going to get that 2nd service pack out and will it fix all these issues?
