PSPx4 Bugs and fixes.

Post by brucet »

I know that there are many threads on all the bugs, features and fixes of PSPx4 on this forum. But one has to read all the threads and posts to findout about them all.

Is there any chance of just one thread that we can all list the features, fixes and continuing bugs on this forum.
It would certainly help me and may even get read by someone at Corel.
The thread just needs to be restricted to actual information and not contain comments, discussions or other diversions.

Such as. "Bug - Frames won't work with 16 bit files. They can be loaded and saved but won't reload".

Then if someone has an answer they can post it on a new thread.

How about it?

Thanks.

It sounds like a great idea.

We should have a sticky topic saying something like this: PSP X4 pending bugs and fixes and enclosed links to relevant threads.

OK -- I'm making this a sticky. But at the same time, I have to say that during the beta testing a similar attempt was made, and a parallel effort to get information on which bugs Corel had fixed. But even with the direct reporting process in the beta process, there was never any guarantee that the listy was ever comprehensive, much less that Corel actively worked to rectify all of them.

Part of the problem with bugs, as always, is that to be a bug, the problem has to be replicable. And just looking at many of the problems with X4, for instance, it is difficult to say that this is necessarily the case or necessarily attributable to the program. Some are, definitely. But just claiming something is a bug does not necessarily make it so...

I hear what you're saying Ken but I think we need a simple clean list. If we have such a list then other posts can confirm if they are real bugs or not. I would tend to leave that up to the moderators and/or the Corel team.

As it is at the moment I have no idea what are or aren't bugs or user issues. A well moderated list may save everyone time.

Thanks.

My problem is one that a few others seem to be having but nothing is working for me. I've been using Paint Shop Pro for around 15 years and have been through several versions. I'm no expert computer user but I know my way around and am quite happy to do any nitty gritty work that is needed (usually aided by a quick google for advice). I have been using X2 for a couple of years and recently bought X4 after hearing that Corel had listened to buyers and sorted out some problems via SP1. I uninstalled X2, restarted and proceeded to install my new X4. Install went OK but on startup it crashed at the initializing palettes on the splash screen...

The story so far...

The program crashes at the !Initializing Palettes" every time I try to start it.

1. Tried uninstalling it (a few times) and have tried the Revo Uninstaller as suggested by another member.
2. Tried the holding down Shift while starting.
3. Tried the Restore Database (via start/programs/corel...)
4. As suggested here in the forums I created a new admin user account and installed it using that. It seems to work fine on this new account but as soon as I switch back to my own account it won't load!

When I started it in the new account it popped up the option to install the upgrade (service pack) but crashed when I tried, saying some dll file was missing or something. I switched back to my original account and installed the service pack from the file I downloaded the other day. It all went fine, and although the program still won't load in "my" account, when I switch to the new account and load it up all the new SP1 stuff is installed.

I'm at a complete loss here. I've been using PSP for years and have never had any problems until now, I'm beginning to wish I had never bothered to "upgrade", as so far it's been a nightmare.

Member andow2 suggested deleting a folder which solved their identical problem but I don't have a folder even resembling the one mentioned!

"C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Corel"

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium and have NOTHING that is even remotely similar to such a folder. Even a folder search for "AppData" comes up empty. (same on both accounts)

I'm pretty close to pulling my hair out, or smashing my computer but as I can't afford to lose either my hair or my computer, I will have to give up on this shortly and try and go back to X2.

I have a terrible sinking feeling though that whatever is causing this problem will now ruin my X2, if that is the case I will not be very happy with Corel.

Upgrading a program as popular as this should not be such hard work. How the hell do they expect the average man in the street to work out all this rubbish, I'm pretty clued up and I'm at a loss!

Please, please, I am desperate for some advice....and please don't just suggest that I continue to switch users when I want to use X4. Apart from the fact that none of my files show up in that account, it's just too much hassle when I shouldn't have to be doing it.

Hopefully one of the experts here can throw some light on this irritating bug :?

*******PROBLEM SOLVED********

Thanks to eL_PuSHeR for reminding me to unhide folders in explorer. The deleting the AppData Corel folder worked a charm. Sorry for all my posts on this in several threads.

I'm so relieved that I can get back to my little hobby now :D

Thanks guys!

Thanks Ken.

Let's see if we are able to keep a clean tidy list.

I will link myself:

BUG: TIFF Saving issues

DESCRIPTION: When saving or modifying existing TIFF files PSP X4 always save them as a something that resembles a two-page multipage TIFF where the first page is the current bitmap and the second one is what appears to be a thumbnail.

See my own thread here.

REPRODUCIBILITY: Always.

Your Cheers & Jeers for SP1

Post by allicorn »

X4 SP1 just auto-updated here. There's a lot to be happy about, but also some things that still need attention.

After a quick peek, the first few that stand out for me are...

Cheers! :-)

4 Workspace Colors (terrific!)
Colored icons (very helpful)
Small icons (nice!)

Jeers :-(

Materials & Layer palettes still resize themselves into a mess every time I start the program. Major pain, though there are (fiddly) workarounds.
Customize Button Appearance is still broken. There are controls to choose your own icons, but they're always disabled.
Slow start-up. Organizer's Navigation pane still seems to lock everything up for many seconds after launch.
Shut-down. PSPX4 seems to just silently die on exit. I have to use Task Manager to kill it off if I want to start it up again.
Vibrancy effect dialog still doesn't respond to keys (meant to report this before but forgot, oops!)

Still lots to explore no doubt but initial verdict:

Very much appreciated work Corel!
(but keep 'em coming ;-) )

This week's service pack did not address the bug encountered by those of us using 64-bit Vista or 64-bit Win 7 and running Topaz Labs filters.

I discuss the issue here, and several of us have reported the bug on this forum already.

Many thanks to Corel for these latest helpful fixes. Here's hoping the next patch will solve our difficulties with the Topaz plug-ins.

Forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong place.

I have been using PSP for 3-4 years now mainly for creating siggy tags - nothing big. I started out using PSPx2 which I loved but it has a habit of crashing A LOT,some days it will be constant crashes and others none at all. I have a lot of filters which I direct PSP to the folders, same goes with my ever increasing collection of Pay To Use tubes. :) Because of the crashing I upgraded to x3 but hated that version, well lets just say maybe I never gave it time to like it - the text feature changed in this version (which I see is also the same in x4 *grr*) so I reverted back to x2. I love that little text box pop up. Oh and I do know pressing shift will bring the box up.

I upgraded to x4 (download purchase) a few days ago and I am loving it EXCEPT I cannot copy frames or frame from Animation Shop and right click in my PSP to paste as a new image as this causes crashing every time. I've read somewhere in this forum how the patch (SP1) fixed this issue. I hate to say it has not for me nor has it for 2 other PSPx4 users in a forum I am with.

Any real chance that this is still on the list for a fix please?

Cheers,Tina.

Opens always images with 72ppi.

PSPX4, 14.0.0.332

Image -> Resize:
  • 1. change to higher ppi
    2. File - Save: result fine and can be confirmed in other photo editing programs
    3. Re-open in PSPX4, it's again shown as 72ppi
PSPX4, 14.1.0.5, SP1:

Do 1. to 3. in PSPX4 SP 1 and save as JPG

Result: it works fine.

JPGs from cameras or photo editing programs like Photoshop are still opened with 72ppi.

Other formats like PNG and TIFF seem to be fine.

Already addressed to the DevTeam. No further bug report required.
I work for the Corel UK Support. I will not give technical support through this forum and my answer is only related to this thread.

This has not been addressed, despite reporting it to The Team.
I would guess that Animation Shop is now so old that they're not very interested.
Of course it shouldn't be like that.
I have other had issues with copying from elsewhere and pasting into X4 causing problems. At the moment it seems to be 'only' Animation Shop that causes a problem.
My workaround: I copy the frame from Animation Shop to Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 7, then copy it from there to X4! No crash.
You could try something similar perhaps, I mean copying to another program first.
It's a pain, but at least X4 doesn't crash :-)

Hi all,

I am new to this board, but have been an enthusiastic PSP user since many years. Actually, since PSP 5 :)
I signed up here because I have a huge issue with PSP X4 since the big update from last week.

Not sure if anyone has the same issue, but I can not create new layers in the layer panel anymore.
All options from Layer, Adjustment Layer and Mask Layer (the small buttons at the bottom of the Layers panel) are always greyed out!
I CAN, however, create new layers from the layer menu.
I tried this on 2 machines, one XP and one Vista, both have the same issue since the update.

I do have the layer panel moved to my second screen.

Anyone any solution?

->> I added a (huge) screen shot to illustrate my issue T_T pls h-h-help?

It does mention in the SP1 download notes on the download page that it will basically reset and/or overwrite any customised workspaces...nuisance, but not a biggy. I spent 30min re-doing all my workspaces
