Post by Coral »

Why do I allways have a 4:3 preview window ? Although the captured movie is of the correct AR, 16:9

Hi Carole

What version of video studio are you using?
X4 should default to 16:9

For earlier versions the default aspect ratio is set from the Start up Screen.
Go to preferences (F6)
General tab—tick Show Start Up Screen
Re-start Video Studio, the start up screen will show, tick the option for 16:9
Then tick do not show again.........

Also

Whilst in Preferences tick Show Messages when inserting First Video.
From a new project when you inert a video file you may be prompted to match the project properties. Does not work for all types…..

Thank you Trevor for you reply. I have an idea what is happening but I think there is no way I can fix it. I am capturing from a sat receiver. The picture if viewed on a 4:3 TV screen appears with upper and lower black borders. Viewing the picture on a widescreen TV set at an AR of 16:9, the borders are removed (sort of cropped) and the picture keeps a perfect AR, filling the screen. In VideoStudio the pictue is streached vertically because the application is filling the screen with the picture removing the upper and lower borders thus creating an AR of 4:3. This, for example, does not happen in Pinnacle Studio, since the AR selected by the user sets the preview window accordingly. Thus with an AR of 16:9 the top and botton bars are cropped but the picture is not streached vertically.

Both applications set at 16:9

Hi

Can you give the properties of your video file?
Right click the clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?

Video Studio
From File – Project Properties (Alt+Enter)

Edit tab:-
Normally Perform Non – Square Pixel rendering is ticked. Most video uses non square pixel rendering, what do you see.?

From the General tab Aspect ratio would normally be 16:9

Trevor, According to G Spot the AR of both files is 16:9. Just as I said in my first post. The AR of the movie is correct and play well. It is just the capture preview window on VideoStudio that does not have the correct AR. Can I do someting about it ?

Hi

Did you follow the advice given in my last post?

And from my earlier post did you set the default aspect ratio from the Start Up screen?

I'm not unfamiliar with VideoStudio. I just can't understand why the capture window does not keep a 16:9 AR since my settings are such. The Startup Screen has also been set to 16:9

Hi Carole

Thanks for the images of the project properties.

Can you give the properties of your video file?
Right click the clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
This will show how VS actually reads the file and show the frame size? What is the frame size?

The images you supplied show the preview window of X2 as using 4:3, a 16:9 video should display in proportion having black bars top and bottom.

I can only assume there is some confusion as to the aspect of the video file relating to non square rendering, which is stretching the frame to fill the screen as 4:3.

As a test----What happens if you remove the Non-Square Pixel Rendering option.

-----------------------------------------
Reselect the non square option

Use the overlay track to edit your video file.
Add your video to the first overlay track, right click the preview screen and select fit to screen.

Hi Trevor, I assure you that the captured clip has a 16:9 AR. It is only the capture preview window that is not displaying a correct AR. I shall post an image of the properties later.

Tested with X4 too. Clip properties and capture window. I have uploaded the clip in MediaFire and can drop the link at your PM Inbox, if you wish.

Hi Carol

I do not dispute that the video is using 16:9.
I was hoping to see the frame size.
If it’s a HD video then it may use 1920 x 1080 which is 16:9 and should not cause any aspect problems

However if it’s a standard size it may be using 720 x 567 (480), these pixels are stretched by the process Non Square Pixel Rendering to produce the 16:9 shape.

Even though the properties indicate 16:9, Video Studio may not be recognising the 16:9 flag correctly and treating the video as 4:3.

If this is the case I think it is the sat receiver / recordings may be causing the problem.

Sorry Carol whilst writing this reply, I missed your last post with the attached images.

Are you able to e-mail the video sample , being only 8 Mb

Hi Carol

Thanks for the sample.

I do not have any problems in viewing the sample, it shows as 16:9.
No audio, but you said that.

The only way i see the video as 4:3 is by deselecting the Non Square Pixel option in Project properties (Alt + Enter)

Have you tried a re-install of the program?

Sorry but have a shower to mend......

Hi Trevor,
I have never said that I have problems viweing the captured clips. Infact thay all have the corrct aspect ratio (16:9).
My only concern is that while capturing using X2 or X4, the picture inside the window is not of the correct aspect ratio. As you can see from my previous images. The other 2 applications I use keep a perfectly scaled picture in the capture preview window. Fixing a shower is not much. In a couple of days I'll have to do the whole water system :( I guess thats what retirement is all about

Hi Coral

I must admit I missed two important things, firstly I didn’t realise you were referring to the “capture” screen, even though your image does show the Capture Tab. Suppose that wasted a lot of time.

I don’t understand why Video Studio should display your video that way other than VS not interpreting the aspect correctly. Video Studio should interpret the input signal and display accordingly, and its displaying it as 4:3, we then set the capture properties which is used to create the video file, irrespective of the input signal, we set 16:9.
You get what you require 16:9 and its in proportion.

I assume you are also connecting through a capture card, maybe this is mixing up the videos info?
------------------------------------------------------
And secondly your name is not Carol but Coral, maybe I should have gone to “spec-savers”
