Rendering time

Post by hognut »

I have just taken some short video clips and put them together in a 3min 40 second video. When I tried to save it to my desktop the rendering took a little over an hour. This is my first try so I am really a newbie :) Is it normal to take that long to render? I was planning on making 20 to 40 minute videos but at an hour for every 3 minutes it may not work. Thank you for any advice. Gary C

That does sound rather long -- though rendering time depends amongst other things on the format of the video concerned and what editing you have done to it. So Can you please right click on a video clip in the VS timeline and select Properties, then copy ALL of them here. And do the same if there is more than one format of clip involved. Then we might have a better idea of what to suggest.

We also need to know what format you were rendering the project to. In other words, when you selected Share > Create Video File, what did you choose as the output format?

As Ken said, so much depends on what kind of editing you are doing. For example, on my old Core 2 Duo, rendering a basic 60-minute DV-AVI source with light editing, to DVD (MPEG-2) took about 70 minutes. But when I turned on auto-color correction, rendering time of the same video ballooned to 30 hours! Yes, 30. So depending on your source and destination formats, and on how much editing you're doing, your rendering time may not be at all excessive.
