Simple trim without recompress?

Post by Paul of Chester »

I have been trying for an hour to clip a few frames off the beginning of a video & save. I want to keep everythis as-is. Just trim & save. Everything I try requires recompiling & I loose a generation of quality. When I use "Save Trimmed Video" I get an error that says "Unable to get samples.(osErr=-9461)".

Any Ideas?
I just want to trim & save.

Thanks, Pc

Welcome to the forums.

What is the format/properties of your video? You can right click a clip either in the VS timeline or its library window and select Properties. It would be useful if you could copy ALL the Properties here.

In all my years on this forum, I cannot remember seeing that particular error message before, but then again, few people these days want to save an edited clip in real state. They tend to leave it as a virtual file in a project. I used to use Save Trimmed Video, but haven't now for the past three versions, so I am not really qualified to comment on what might be wrong.

Depending on the format, you can save your trimmed video in a way which should not lead to degradation. That is by using Share > Create Video File > Same as First Clip. SmartRender should be enabled by default, unless you have changed things. And SmartRender means that only those areas of the clip which have been edited will be re-rendered. In this case, I would think it would be at most only the new first frame. All the rest should remain untouched and the render should be virtually instantaneous.

Unfortunately, Same As First Clip doesn't necessarily work with some of the less common formats.

Hello Ken,
Thank you for your reply. This particular video is an MOV. I have a version in MPG that is less than half the size. I can try that one. My rule for editing has been to always return to the best quality possible. The videos I maintain are in a mix of formats, qualities and sizes. They come from several sources. I convert them to FLV and add them to a "Video Hub" page on the website I run. I realized many of these videos load up on a black screen then fade in. This looks good when playing but shows a black rectangle on the web page before anyone clicks "play". I decided to trim the black off so the first frame is an image. That way it actually looks like the video is loaded and ready to play to the site visitor. Because some of the videos were given to me as 2nd and 3rd generations already I hated to add to that.

Because it doesn't work for me so I can't explor it, can you tell me the purpose of the "Save Trimmed Video"?

Thanks,
Paul

SAVE TRIMMED VIDEO is a feature of VS where it saves the trimmed video to a new file and does not alter the original file.

I don't see that there was an answer to this question. I am having the same issue, same error code. Any solution? I'd like to be able to save various parts of the clip with various names to recombine in a different order, but am unable to save any of the trimmed clips using the 'save trimmed video' option. I am using Corel VideoStodio Pro.

Thanks,
Helene

There is no need to actually create new video clips in order to do what you want - all cutting and trimming in VideoStudio is virtual - you never ever modify your original clip - so to do what you want just cut the clip in the timeline to produce the bit you want to keep - then just drag that small piece up into the library where a new thumbnail will be created - this thumbnail points only to the bit you have selected - double click slowly on the name under the thumbnail and edit it's name.

keep doing that for all the clips you want to make and you have a number of thumbnails in your library - now forever more you can just drag a thumbnail down into the timeline and the bit you want will appear.

At no time have you changed the original so it is still as good as when you started - and you do not have hundreds of little video clips on your hard drive just the one big original.

last little tip - rename your original video clip in Windows to a sensible name BEFORE you start - most cameras and VideoStudio do not give files a sensible name that will mean something to you in 6 months time.

Thanks so much for your thorough reply. I have a better understanding of how the program works. I still have 2 questions, though, if you don't mind.

How exactly do I drag the clipped video to the library? I have it clipped in the window on the left, and I've tried left clicking on the video image itself and dragging to the library, which is how I would normally drag things, and nothing happens. I've tried clicking and dragging on everything I can think of and can't get it to the library.

Why is there a 'saved trimmed video' option if it doesn't work?

Thanks again,
Hel

Hi Hel

After using the Trimmed Video tool you hit Ok this takes you back to the main edit timelines where your trimmed video clips can be seen.
Drag this to the library will create a copy, a thumbnail representing your video clip.

I have to say that I do not use the Multi-trim Video tool but prefer to use the scissors and trim handles immediately below the preview screen.

helene - re the drag and drop - yes that is how you do it in VideoStudio.

When you move your cursor over the video in the timeline it will change to a four headed arrow indicating it is ready to move the video anywhere - left click and hold and slide upwards - as you leave the timeline the cursor changes to the round "not allowed" symbol - keep going up into a video library (must be a video/photo library - not transitions or effects) - as you slide into the library the cursor will change again into an arrow with a oblong and a plus sign - if there are thumbnails in the library a vertical bar will appear between them showing where the thumbnail will appear - move your cursor to the position you want and let go of the left key and the thumbnail should appear.

The "Saved Trimmed Video" does work - for most people - it appears for some reason not for you
