Re: X4 SP1 now available
I guess, as it's a new day (UK) and my passion about PSP has leveled off a bit... I really is passion not anger that fuels me...
I've completed most of the preferences etc, work to get it as I want it, so I can get some work done, and I'm quite pleased with the result, and of any Corel version todate, this might be the one to drag me away from my beloved PSP 9.
However, I find the nasty bug that threw X4 originally into a freeze still remains.
Moving from the Toy sections, Manage and Adjust to the real PSP part "Edit" still regularly throws the
*** "Encountered an improper argument." error, and here it requires PSP to be Quit and re-run to get out of it, but then there's another problem, when re-run and it does display, it has lost my workspace, and displays the default workspace that came with it. (Obviously Sans all my changes).
Aside from re-booting the computer, the only way during an OS session I can get my workspace back, it to Load it manually from "File-Workspace".
That smells of a PSP registry error somewhere.
FWIW. The Workspaces are still stored in the X4 default of "All Users".
I still haven't quite fathomed what this error actually means, does anyone really know?

I reported it to Corel who replied "The error message itself is not included in our SP1 fixing scope."
but went on to say:
"Do you think you can uninstall and install PSP again to see if it fixes the problem?
Please let me know the result so we can dig into the issue."
Uninstalling made no difference.
As a result I cannot usefully use "Adjust Mode" even if I wanted to as I then have to close X4.
My workspace does return successfully though, when I restart in Edit Mode (set in Preferences).

Re: X4 SP1 now available
Since installing Service Pack 1, each time I start my PC and open PSPX4, the Activation screen pops up. I click on Activate now, and all is OK, but why this behaviour only after the SP1 install?

Re: X4 SP1 now available
Interesting set of questions you sent me Levi.
I've been trying all day to force X4 to produce that error, without luck, when last evening it did it four times.
We get a small rectangular window with PSP at the top and the message as posted, "Encountered an improper argument" and that's it.
I've tried a few of your thoughts, but none of them forced the issue today, though yesterday evening it was associated with the Open (yellow) folder icon, and selecting from the subsequent filer window.
If... More likely, when it happens again, I'll look in the Windows log for a clue or hopefully more.
That said, I've looked through yesterdays Win Logs for Applications and System and there were no PSP error events logged.
Ax
That said number 2... I personally have no use for either Manage or Adjust as 99.9999 percent of the time I only use the Edit function.
However, SWMBO, who also occasionally uses PSP, does use those two other things.

Re: X4 SP1 now available
Another interesting one cropped up again today, it occurred with the original X4 and still happens with X4 SP1.
When starting up X4 it will get part way through the splash screen then freeze... forever if I didn't do something about it.
Computer management "Event viewer - Application" reports:
Faulting application Paintshop Pro etc, etc...
Faulting module Corelorganizer.dll version 14.1.0.46 fault address 0x00042abf
I assume that must mean something to someone?

Ax wrote some day ago...
"...and of any Corel version to date, this might be the one to drag me away from my beloved PSP 9."
Well, interestingly, today I had a lot of graphics work to do so I started out with X4 just to see, and yes it functioned okay, I can work with the light Gray UI, and the colored tool icons are good, but my work throughput was substantially slower than it should have been, so after a while I reverted to PSP9 again, and my work rate shot up.
There are a number of annoyances with the Corel versions, particularly things they've removed, but the main PITA at the moment is still not being able to drag thumbnails into the order of aesthetic value as/when I'm creating multiple manipulated versions... I'm stuck with any of the fixed sort options, none of which is of any use when trying to do an aesthetic comparison.
I really don't see why there can't be a No-Sort option for folks like me so the thumbs can be dragged manually to an order.

Re: X4 SP1 now available
Got my update automatically when I exited X4 earlier, "There's a new version, Install now?", that kind of thing. Worked great.
Rebuilding my heavily customized workspace... not so great. Ho hum.
Positives: new workspace colors are wonderful, new colored icons are wonderful, new small-icon mode terrific. Fixes for a few things.
Things I'm still seeing that niggle me:
Organizer Navigation pane no longer shows wildly shuffling scroll bars for a minute on startup... but I'm pretty sure it's just a cosmetic change. The program is still unresponsive for a very long time when I start it. The only solution is to remove keep the folder branches in Navigation to a barely-helpful minimum. As soon as I add - say - my main image library tree, startup grinds down to an intolerable minute-long-or-more process.
Second, (some) docked palettes still don't stay the same size between sessions in the program. I have the common Materials & Layers palettes stacked on the right side and each time the program starts the border between them has shuffled another step or two toward an even distribution. Very annoying since the content of the Materials palette is very small and the content of the Layers palette - potentially - very very big. Hanging on for that next Support Pack now. (Workaround: undock the palettes and float them, dock some other palette you don't need underneath them to prevent the maximized image pane from sliding under your floating palettes).
So, lots of good things. A couple bad things. A number of littler things I think need work but could probably wait.
Much appreciated Corel. Keep 'em coming.
