VS X4 stopped capture after VS10+ removed

Post by carole12 »

Hi there,

I downloaded and bought Video Studio X4 this morning online from Corel.

I have a Mecer i7 1.5T harddrive - 4GB RAM. OS Windows 7. I have tried to capture from my Sony Camcorder (DCR-HC19E) but I get the message 'cannot start the capture graph'. This only seems to have happened since I removed VS10+ from my pc - as during the trial period of VSX4 I was able to capture perfectly well. It seems a bit silly to have to re-install VS10+ now.

Any thoughts?

... Ummm ... Can you at least share with us what format video you are trying to capture, what you are trying to capture it from and what you are using to capture it (e.g. Firewire, USB, some capture device)? If capturing from a camera, what is its make or model?

Hallo,

I am using a Firewire which I have been doing for the past few years successfully with the same Sony camcorder. (I have edited my previous post giving details). The format is DV - Source Sony DV Device. Capture file name .....avi. 720x576 DV type-1 Pal.

Hope this helps for now?

Many thanks

Windows 7 introduced a new Firewire driver. It is possible -- indeed likely -- that removing VS 10, which used the old firewire driver, also removed the old driver, with the new one being automatically used instead.

You will need to go into Control Panel > Device Manager, and find the IEEE1394 Controller entry and double click on it. A dialogue box will appear with various tabs. Select the one relating to the Driver. There should be a button with something like "Roll back driver" on it. (Sorry, I'm using an Android tablet at the moment, so don't have access to Windows.) Click that and you should be given access to an older "legacy" driver. Click OK and ignore any messages warning against installing older drivers or whatever. VS should then be able to access this legacy driver and work again to capture DV.

The other alternative would be to download and install a small freeware program a lot of us here use called WinDV, You can find it at windv.mourek.cz We use it since it always seems to work and because you can give the captured files a more sensible name than that assigned by VS.

Hallo,

Many thanks for your reply to me. I do appreciate it.

Can you believe that my 'roll back driver' is 'greyed' out - therefore I am unable to click on it!!!! Oh what a shame!! I have no idea as to why - it does say it is working okay etc.

Looks like I shall have to go the WinDV route then?

Thankyou once again.

Hi there again,

I have downloaded the WinDV and captured a little try out.

Next question: How do I get the WinDV captured movie to open up in Video Studio X4 so that I can edit. I have tried each of the files in the VSX4 folder, but none of them work.

Help!

That's puzzling. WinDV, as its name implies, captures files as .avi in the DV/AVI format, exactly the same as Video Studio (when it's working!!!) So it should just be a matter, in VS, of using the Insert Media command and navigating to where the captured .avis are stored, then choosing the one(s) you want to open.

Can you also explain what you mean by:
I have tried each of the files in the VSX4 folder
Which folder is that? In Windows 7's Video library window, I would have created a new sub-folder called, say, WinDV Captures. Then in WinDV, I would have designated that as the folder for captured files. I would then give the files to be captured a sensible name, and do the capturing. Then as I say above, I would open X4, right click in the timeline and choose Insert Media. Then navigate to my WinDV folder and choose the captured files.

Hallo once again,

Thankyou so much for your help.

In all these years, I never realised I could actually import a video or a capture from another device in the timeline!! I always went to 'file' ' and 'open project' which of course couldn't happen if it was not a VS Project!! I couldn't do an 'open with' on any of the files in the main folder ( Coral VS X4 ) either which is in My Documents. For example my Photoimpact 12 opens up with 'Photoimpact launcher'.

Nonetheless, aside from the above - I did a 'system restore' to the day before - incorporating VS8 and VS10 and VSX4 (VS10 was an upgrade to VS8) and it is all working well once again. No capture problems at all. I think I would rather capture through VSX4 if I can - not too keen on not having 'split by scene' on the WinDV (unless there is one - I haven't looked properly : - ) ).

Many thanks.

Hi Carole

Win DV captures DV footage and uses Split by Scene.
At least it does for me, and I do not think you can turn it off.
That is it always uses Split by Scene

I thought it might - I was just too lazy to look. Once again thankyou very much.

You never know I just might, for some reason, have to make use of WinDV at some stage and it is good to know these things.

Should I post the next query to another heading? I would like to know how many Flash Animations come with Video Studio X4? For example where is 'Gold Crown' - where is the lovely 'Sparkling wand' that moves across the screen- as well as the 'Club' that one can use to bash somebody over the head..............I don't have them......and in fact have hardly any at all - possibly only about 4 Flash Animations.

Just wondering?
