In the Settings/Project Properties/Edit/General tab there is a frame type option with three options: upper field first, lower field first, or frame-based. Is there any guidance on how to choose these? I never felt a need to change but lack any info to suggest otherwise. Any guidance on this - what is preferred, what it might depend upon. My raw video is .mts files 1920x1080. I believe it is interlaced but not sure which way. Thoughts, anyone?

If your raw video is indeed interlaced, then you would need Upper Field First which is the default setting in any case. And it is the default setting because these days the great bulk of camcorders produce interlaced Upper Field First video. Only mini DV standard def camcorders produced Lower Field First video.

But what brand and model is your camcorder? If it does indeed produce non-interlaced i.e. progressive, high def video, then you would choose Frame Based. Normally there would be something indicating it films in 'p' for progressive mode, with a frame rate of, say, 50 (PAL) or 60 (NTSC) frames per second. But VS X4 and its predecessors cannot handle or produce such video in its native format. So if VS is working for you with this video, I would say you have interlaced UFF video.
