Hi all. I finally got around to downloading the trial version of VSX4 since the price is unbeatable right now. But it's not quite holding up to my expectations.
Installing had to be done twice but the second time it went rather smoothly.
Getting started, for me who's not used any version of Corel's video editors, wasn't exactly straight forward and that video in the Corel Guide (orange symbol with a down arrow) called Video Studio Intro really didn't introduce me to anything. For a novice to try to find anything useful in the guide.... well the guide is just a mess.
Anyways, on to my dilemma. I had recorded an hours worth of TV from my TV tuner card. I thought I'd try this out on VS to see what it's capable of. To my dismay the program locks up for 2-3 minutes before finally stating that the format isn't compatible and it offers to convert it to something VS can use. I agree and a few minutes later there it was. So I tried again, and again it locked the program up solid for 2-3 minutes from the file that VS had created. But then it's able to do something, until you do too many somethings and it locks up again. Also, it doesn't appear that the audio track converted with the new format, which is pretty useless.
The file is 3.2 gigs of memory. I've read on this forum that VS is just a 32 bit program, so it can't address more than 2gb of RAM at a time. Is this just too much for the program? I've tried cutting or editing it smaller but the program is just unusable and I keep running into a frozen program, with my CPU usage from the program itself maxing out at around 8%.
Is this too much for Video Studio X4?

Do you know which format your video card uses or what extension is on the files captured by it? I know that my Dvico Fusion card captures in high def but using a codec which VS cannot read (.tp). Although VS claims that it could convert the file to something usable, I had to use the program which came with the card to first convert the video to program stream. But that program often failed, so I resorted to another freeware program called HDTV2MPEG2. Sorry, I don't have a URL for it, but a Google search should find it. I also used VideoReDo but that is a commercial product costing around US$50. Useful tool, though.

Re: Is this too much for Video Studio X4?
Thanks for the reply Ken, I'm using a Hauppauge 1600 PCI card on Win7 via the Microsoft Media Center. The extension of the recorded file is .wtv from there. I can install the software that comes with the card and get an Mpeg if I remember correctly. I do prefer the Media Center to WinTV (Hauppauge's program) so I may take a look at free format converters. If I don't find anything I'll install WinTV, it's actually not a bad program I just like Media Center better.
I'll report back with what I find out.
