Hi
I'm near completion of a year long video project. I inserted several HD video clips into my VS X4 time line which includes many other HD/SD and .jpg clips along with transitions, music, etc. For effect, I used the tool in VS to speed up two or three of these clips by about 300%. Without the effect, the scene doesn't work so I'd like to keep it this way.
I noticed that when playing the clip in the time line after the effect is added, it plays very jumpy and jerky. Without the effect it plays fine as do all the other clips in my project. I am guessing the effect puts a strain on the system but mostly, my system is fine. However, the hard drive may be the culprit and not able to get the data fast enough to provide a smooth video. Is that possible? My cpu (core 2 quad Q6600 clocked to 3.0 g), new video card, memory, and monitor (HD certified) are all new and well within spec.
My question: Do you think the stuttering video will also be present in the final burn of a Blu-Ray? Or is this just a function of the preview window?
This project is due in three weeks so I wanted to stay ahead of any issues.
As always, thank you for any advice you can offer!

Hi Mark
When you use the speed /time lapse option, increasing to 300% will effectively remove frames.
Less frames played at the same rate will increase speed, some flickering may be noticeable.
Render the portion of project to a new video file to see the completed result.
Use the Project Playback Range to select individual portions of the project.
Share Create Video File-***
Options-choose Project playback Range—render the section
By the way how long is the speeded up video section?

Re: Sped Up Video Effect-A Rendering Issue?
Hi Trevor
Thanks for the reply. I do appreciate your expertise. There are (I believe-not on my home system at the moment) about three or four back to back scenes each running about 30-44 seconds sped up to yield much shorter clips.
I will render the sped up scenes to test and see what happens.
Thank you
Mark

Re: Sped Up Video Effect-A Rendering Issue?
Just wanted you to know that I rendered that portion of the video (I actually started 3 mins prior and let it finish to the end) and there was no stuttering or jittering. It was perfect and really drove home the idea of the scene. Even at 300%+ speed increase it was smooth. I guess the preview screen has a problem with that sort of effect but in the final render, there were no issues. Thanks for the advice. I just love tthis forum!

Re: Sped Up Video Effect-A Rendering Issue?
One of the ongoing limitations of the preview process is that we are asking our computers to throw together a complex series of actions, often using complex video formats to start with, and do it all on the fly. The result is often stuttering video, even on powerful computers. Over the years I guess I have learned to live with it since the proof, as you have found, is usually in the "pudding" of the final output after rendering... and that is usually smooth!
