X4 trial and full download version

Post by grumpfuttock1 »

Hi,
I have been using the trial version of PSP X4 for a few days now, and have just bought the full version (upgrade and not ultimate version). After completing the online purchase I downloaded the full version to burn to a CD. I had planned to enter the reg number in the trial version as advised in the email receipt of my purchase. My question is, what is the difference between the two versions, as the trial version had a file size of 288 Mb and the downloaded version a file size of 337 Mb :?: Does the downloaded file include any updates (I haven't seen any notices of an update) thus accounting for the larger size :?:
Should I make extra work for myself and remove the trial version and install the downloaded version :?: Oddly I had the same thing with X3 only opposite, the downloaded version was larger than the downloaded version. The downloaded X3 full version was difficult to install and ran extremely slowly and the trial version installed and ran perfectly OK.

Hoping someone can explain the difference and give me advice on which version I should install.

All the best to you all.
John.

My advice would be to uninstall the trial version, but that's just me. The full downloaded version is larger because it has more content. Trial versions are slimmed down and are just meant as teasers. I am not sure how you would get this extra content if you activated the trial version, though obviously it must be possible.

To answer one of your questions, there are no updates included as the first update, SP1, has not been released yet.

Thank you Ken & Kathy for your quick reply.

I uninstalled the trial version, noticed that it was listed in the Control Panel --> Programs & Features as having a program size of 322 Mb. The installation of the download version went fine, and I see that that is listed in the Programs & Features list as having exactly the same size as the trial version when installed.... hmmmm... strange !
I also notice that X3 is listed as occupying 563 Mb ! Some difference. They say the best things come in smaller packages :D Well X4 is certainly quicker than X3.

I am looking forward to the SP1 release, and getting coloured icons again, but I must say I find the dark workspace so much more restful to my eyes than the classic style ! It was nice to read in another thread that there will soon be 4 choices of workspace style. I am well aware that some people do not agree with me, so it is nice to know that Corel have listened and we all get a reasonable choice.

Many thanks,
John.

Glad the download and installation went well for you John. Yes, X4 is much faster and I think you will be very pleased with it.

The non-glarey workspace is one of the features that caused me to choose PSP, that and the fact that I can do everything without having to remember keyboard shortcuts, and being able to zoom in and out using the mouse wheel whilst working on a pic.
As for being in the minority...we could be in the SILENT majority  I had better leave it at that, I don't want to be accused of going off topic or provoking an uproar :!: It sounds like we should all be happy soon when SP1 appears.

To Kathy:- Oh I am very pleased with it. I started with PSP 5 long, long ago. Used other a number of other programs later on, then tried and purchased PSP X2 and X3 and have derived great pleasure from working with them, and now also X4. My only gripe is the lack of a dedicated gradient tool, I miss being able to select the colours, and then drag the tool across the area to be graduated. The PSP gradient on the colour palette is OK, but I find it a bit more time consuming.

The main difference in size between X3 and X4 is the languages.
In X3 "C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Photo Pro\X3\PSPClassic\Languages" has fourteen languages and takes up 209MB.
In X4 "C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X4\Languages" has only those you choose to install. In my case that is only English, so the folder is just 25.2MB.
