unending installation failures X4

Post by oldSarge »

For two days I have attempted to install and run the downloaded version of X4 Ultimate with no success. Corel's suggestions have been tried to no avail. I can install the program, run it once, then get the error message "this copy of PaintShop Pro has been damaged or illegally modified. Please reinstall from your original source." This I have done many times and many ways...under a newly established account, by shutting down all security software, including my firewall, every possible running process and services also. I have also tried downloading and installing the trial version with the same result. Between each uninstall and re-install I clean the registry of all Corel entries. I am beginning to think this software is not compatible with 64-bit Win 7 Pro, in spite of claims to the contrary. I am not a novice, and have been tweaking, repairing and building machines since the early days of the Commodore VIC 20, but this software has completely stymied me. Any help would be appreciated. At this point I feel like I've been scammed out of sixty bucks and have nothing to show for it.

Well, there are quite a few users with 64 bit system running it successfully... But have you looked in Task Manager > Processes to ensure the awful Protexis is running. If it isn't, that will produce the sort of error you are getting.

I just discovered posts, after submitting my own, about the DRM issues. (I spent much of a day unsuccessfully achieving registration on this forum, and finally gave up) I feel sure this is my problem. One of the reasons I resisted the change to Win 7 was all the complaints I saw about DRM issues. I had kind of forgotten about them until now. You would think the lady who answered my support phone call would know about this. If I had known Corel was going to be sitting beside me all day making sure I don't do anything unethical with their software, I would have purchased something else. As an old guy who has tasted the freedoms of the early years, this kind of manufacturer paranoia makes me want to puke. Can anyone explain what triggers Potexis to run or where it is located? I still have both the purchase and trial downloads on my machine. Perhaps I could re-install once more and get the software to cooperate if I can get this hideous DRM code to run again. I didn't purposely block its execution. I'm not sure where it's located, or why it stops activating after I shut down the program the first time and re-open it again.

Where did you get your copy of X4 from..
If directly from Corel ask for a new download..
You shouldn't be having any problems W7 64bits runs it perfectly..

Protexis should show up in Task Manager > Services, and it should show itself as running. If it is not, then right click abd choose 'Start Service'.

I would note that I also have a second version of it running at the same time, under the name 'PSI_SVC_2' and it calls itself Protexis Licensing V2. I assume it is also supposed to be running (as mine is), though I am not sure which applies to PSP and which to Video Studio which I also have on this computer.

Resolution after three days! I finally realized that the DRM software was at the core of my problems. I spent almost 3 hours with one of Corel's tech support personnel trying to resolve this issue. (A very positive experience BTW) Numerous reinstall methods were tried with no success. Corel was finally forced to allow me to download an image of the install program, which produced a successful installation at last. It seems the install would only work properly if the hideous Protexis software was embedded in the install program itself. This fiasco cost me 3 days of productivity. Had I known this product required DRM software to be installed and running on my machine I would not have made the purchase. I have no doubt that the combined cost to myself and Corel far out weighed the risk they would have taken to trust me to run the software I purchased without having Big Brother hovering over my every move. Pathetic.

Unfortunately Big Brother is looking over all of us..
looking for illegal software.
Corel products won't run with out Protexsis Licensing and it's asscoiate enabled..
there is a way try and Google it..
