PSPx2 Install Problem

Post by jake_7363 »

Hello,
I have been using PSP x2 for some time and am very happy - until today.
After using the software last week, I closed it without issue. Today, I couldn't open it. Using Windows 7 Pro on a Dell XPS 410 (8G RAM), I did a complete shutdown and restart, but still could not get the app to start.

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall three (3) times, and each time it stops short in the last phase stating 37 seconds remaining. One of the uninstalls was "by the book" as I followed the instructions in the Knowledge Base. This completely baffles me. I have not installed any new software or hardware, had no other issues with my PC, it runs up to speed and has no lugging or freezes. This is literally the only piece of software that is giving me any problems, right now. Historically, as mentioned before, this app has performed flawlessly for me and I really miss not being able to use it.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jake

Unfortunately, the restore point didn't work, either.

Any other suggestions?

AFAIK.. PSP X2 is not compatible with Windows 7 (though others will say otherwise) but I'll stick to the fact that PSP X2 was not developed for Windows 7 environment.

You can visit http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 4516325170, to know which version of the Corel Software is compatible with Windows 7.

There is a workaround for you to make old program works on Windows 7, however we cannot assure you this is a 100% fool proof. You can use the Windows 7 Program Compatibility and the Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC, which are both from Microsoft.

You can follow the steps for Windows 7 Program Compatibility from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... of-Windows

You can download and install the Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtua ... nload.aspx.

You may want to try PSP X4 which is fully compatible with Windows 7 and you can download the trial for free and use it for 30 days.

I understand what you are saying, but I have been using x2 w/Windows 7 for several months without a glitch or a hitch. As a matter of fact, it has performed perfectly for me.

My biggest fear is that whatever the issue is will remain, even with an upgrade. At this point, without knowing exactly what the issue is, I don't feel confident that the upgrade will cure the problem.

The trial may be the way to go.

Thanks, for the reply!

Yes J X2 works perfecty in W7 64bits much better than either X3 or X4..
don't let anyone tell you it doesn't..
Did you go back far enough with system restore .
back to before your problem started always works for me..
My computer is only 8 months old.
I have to use system restore in safe mode..
it is the only way it works since SP1..Cheers

Surely did... The problem surfaced the day before yesterday (06 Nov 2011) and I went back to Oct 30.
The only thing I observed is that it tries to start, then shuts down. I have a freeware Task Manager (AnVir) that is awesome and it shows that the CPU usage begins, tops at about 5-7%, then zeros out. It stays in the Processes, but shows no activity.

As mentioned in an earlier post, there are literally no other software or hardware issues on this unit, and it really screams for the age of it (about 4+ years). I am trying to recall any anomalies that might have happened, but keep drawing blanks. Frustrating, to say the least....

Does it show as running in Task Manager > Processes?

Apologies,
".. it shows that the CPU usage begins, tops at about 5-7%, then zeros out. It stays in the Processes, but shows no activity. ."

What I meant to convey: It stays in Processes, but shows 0% CPU, 0% Nem.

But if you End the Process and try restarting it, what happens? I have found that occasionally with Video Studio X4 -- though not, as yet, PSP X4 -- that sometimes it shows as running in Processes but I can't start it. I end the process, and restart, and this time it works.

Understood. Yup, I gave that a few tries, along with restarting Windows Explorer. Also went through the registry manually after an uninstall, went through the App Data folders, Common folders, etc. Obviously somethings amiss, but it's the devil to pay to find it. I even set the load priority to "High," but that proved to be a lesson in futility.

My guess is it's something rather simple but so small it is easily hidden - something like a cross-linked file. The reason I say that is that I do recall the OS hanging up on a Shut Down one time and even though the apps are unloaded, they sometimes stay resident (as in the case of making sure x2 was removed from the Processes). I know that sounds like I'm grabbing at straws....probably because I am.

Jake have you tried opening it in safe mode..
Anvir task manager wouldn't be causing a problem I have that..
You haven't been playing with your Local services???
check to see if Protexsis licensing both are started..
because if they aren't your Corel programs won't start..
they will start and close down..
Cheers

>>Jake have you tried opening it in safe mode..
No, but that is a thought, at least as a diagnostic.

>>You haven't been playing with your Local services???
No. I don't go where I don't know, when it comes to PC's

>>check to see if Protexsis licensing both are started..
>>because if they aren't your Corel programs won't start..
>>they will start and close down..
Will do

>>Jake check your Task manager see if it is running.
>>end the process..shut down your computer and restart,,.start up X2..
>>Check your processes see if it is showing any activity..
>>bring up Anvir and check the processes in there
Will also do. I'll get back on this later today.

Thx.,

Well, I did the check Process/restart/re-open x2 and no luck.
I went to Safe mode and had the same results.

The Protexis suggestion, I am totally unfamiliar with.

However, when I got back to standard from Safe Mode, PSP x2 fired right up!!! Now, I do remember (but it escaped me for this issue) that using the Safe Mode often resolved various issues; but I've never had an experience like this. Other times, the app would fire in Safe Mode and that would be the fix. It confused me that x2 didn't fire in Safe, but I don't much care - all is well.

I do appreciate your patience and hanging in there with me. Thank you so very much!!

Best Regards,

Jake
