Choppy Video - fps mismatch

Post by crts1807 »

The problem I am having is my project video playback is choppy and when I share that video it comes out choppy as well. I have noticed that the project video is running at 30fps. My original video and video clips all run at 40fps.

I have gone into the <Settings><Project Properies> selected Edit File Format AVI clicked on Edit and then on the General tab I changed my fps to 40. I saved the settings.

My project video still stays choppy running at 30fps even if I start a new project all over again.

How do I fix this?

40 fps is most definitely not a normal framerate. I can only imagine it is used by some specialised piece of software such as a screen video grabber. Video Studio would not be able to play it at that rate in project mode because it does not equate with any of the usual frame rates which would normally be 25, 29.97/30, 50 or 59.94/60 fps as these are the framerates associated with PAL or NTSC versions the type of video used on DVDs or Blu-Ray discs or the type of video playable on TV sets or computer monitors. Other possible speeds would be 15 and 24 fps.

Have you tried rendering a video containing these clips using Share > Create Video File > Same As First Clip?

It would be extremely useful to know exactly where this video came from adn what you are trying to use it for (e.g. DVD, YouTube). Could you also please right click on one of the clips in the VS timeline or library window and copy ALL its properties here.

The video comes from a Stand Alone Digital Video Recorder. We then have to upload the video off of the video recorder to access it with VS. I could not grab a screen shot since the program is running on laptop next to me but here is some info for you.

File Format: Microsoft AVI files
Fize Size: 152,984 KB
Frame Rate: 40.000 frames/sec
Duration: 1811.300 seconds
Data Rate: 83.51 kbps
Compression: Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Recorder
Attributes: 24 bits, 352 x 240
Total Frames: 72,452 frame(s)
No Audio

I have set the Project Properties to say
NTSC non-drop fram (30fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 40 fps (I made the resolution larger)
Upper Field First
Uncompressed

I set the Preferences and Performance Proxy Template to show
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 320 x 240, 40 fps
Frame-based
uncompressed
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 bit, Stereo

Even if I click on Share, Create Video File, and Customize a file to save as 40fps it still turns out at 30fps choppy video.

I can only repeat that 40 fps is an unusual frame rate and does not comply with standard rates for DVDs etc. And you haven't said what you are hoping to produce with it. If you are intending to make a standard DVD, then by the international DVD standard, the frame rate used would be 25 (PAL) or 29.97(NTSC) fps. Your video in other words would appear to be slightly slow motion.

You also did not answer my questions whether you tried rendering a video containing these clips using Share > Create Video File > Same As First Clip.

I checked my DVR settings and it is set to default which is 30fps per channel. I contacted the tech support for the DVR. It should not have been converted to 40fps.

The final project is a DVD with the video on it or the video just simply saved as an AVI video so that a client can view it easily.

The program would not let me select Same as First Clip as a created video file.

If you watch a 30fps video it doesn't appear choppy at all. I don't see why the video gets so choppy down grading from 40 fps to 30fps. It should barely have an effect.

Yes that makes sense as long as the conversion from 40 to 30 is done in the way you imagine. My bet is that the conversion throws away 10 out of the 40 frames each second and that is why you see choppy video. You need to do some Internet search for video converters that do it the way you want. I think SUPER may do the conversion for you, but there are many video converters that are free and will probably do the conversion you need... Al
