I have a similar problem when using my old Sony DV camcorder and VSx4 on my Vista laptop.
WinDV solved my problem but perhaps a dumb question: Where do I find the Device Manager to check which codec I have?

In Windows 7 - go "Start >> Control Panel >> Hardware and sound" then select 'Device Manager' on the top row.
