Editing HD

Post by cgflembo »

I am using Video Studio x2 and I am trying to edit video from my HD camcorder. The video that I am trying to edit is in MPEG4 format and at a rate of 30fps at 1280x720. I have tried to change the properties within Videostudio but when I try to watch it or do anything else, the programme crashes and I have to start again. In the past I have to down grade the format to DVD, and then it works, but at a cost. Does VSx2 support this format or do I have to upgrade the programme to support HD editing? I am using a Laptop with a intel core 2 prossessor and a 1024mb Nvidia Geforce graphic card, which I feel should be enough.

Looking at your system info, it looks like your computer is capable in editing HD video, though you may need to make sure that you have smartproxy enable, since this helps in lessening the load on your computer when editing HD video.

Since you are working with MPEG4 video, I would suggest that you download the latest version of Quicktime http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

You may also want to download the VS X4 trial, since VS x4 handles HD video better than VS x2. You can download the trial at http://www.corel.com/akdlm/6763/downloa ... o_TBYB.exe

From memory, 1280 x 720p video only started to emerge at about (or just a little before) the release of X2, and I recall quite a few users had trouble with it. Can we assume you have updated X2 with the available patch(es) from Corel.com > Support? Can you also tell us what the extension of your mpeg-4 files is: .mp4 or .mpg? And where did the video come from -- I am assuming from a digital still camera rather than a camcorder, but it could of course be one of the latter which only uses mp4 (as opposed to AVCHD mpeg-4)... And please give us the brand and model number.

Could you also right click on one of the mpeg-4 files inside VS, please -- either in the timeline or the library window -- and copy ALL its Properties here.

Thanks for getting back to me. The video is from a Sanyo HD camcorder, the properties from the clips are:- MPEG-4 file Video type :-H.264 Baseline profile video, Attributes:- 24bits 1280x720, 16.9 ( this is the lowest quality the camcorder records at) Frames:- 29.976 p/s Data Rate 10087 kbts.
When I tried to change the properties in VideoStudiox2 I could only get MPEG-2, and when I choose that it tells me it is NTSC non drop frame.
I did try watching the project after I changed all the properties, and after a few seconds the VideoSudio stops working and closes down completely. I have updated quicktime, and the patches for x2 but with the same result. As noted before I don`t know if my laptop has the needed specs.

Hi

Do you see any error messages or does the program simply close without warning?

Please try installing QT 7.5.5

What are you intending to make, a video for the internet, YouTube or maybe a DVD.
If DVD what type, a Standard DVD or HD DVD

Changing the project properties is also pretty pointless. Apart from the fact that Corel has never updated that aspect of the program to allow Project Properties to match most common (nowadays) high def formats, it really only becomes relevant if at the end of editing you choose Share > Create Video File > Same as Project Properties. That used to be the easy way of producing an end result if the project was standard def, and is probably still being used by some SD users. However, what you need to be concentrating on is what you are after when editing is complete. Hence Trevor's question about what you are hoping to produce. Once that is established, you choose Share > Create Video File (or Create Disc) and then the output option you want. And in this the Project Properties play no part (unless coincidentally you are after what the Project Properties are by default).

To answer the last few questions, VSx2 just cuts out completely when playing back the project, and I have to restart the program from scratch. The end result for the project is the produce a HD video, I know that I will need to have a HD recorder and HD discs to put it on, but I was trying to see if VS was able to edit the HD video from the camcorder, which it doesn't without crashing. It does defeat the object of recording the video in HD and them having to downgrade it to normal DVD standard, let alone leaving the picture quality all juddery.

Hi
If the program is closing without any warning…………
There was a problem for an earlier version I think VS 10 involving the update of Acrobat Reader
The link to the full post is here, with an extract from Chris below.

I know I am just clutching at straws especially as there have only been a few reports of this issue.
But maybe worth re-installing an earlier version????

http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 1&start=15

Hi everybody
Sorry I have taken so long to continue with this topic....
After recently having numerous problems unrelated to VS (unresponding programs, sound cutting out etc) I finally bit the bullet and did a clean reinstall of Win XP....formatting hard drive etc.
I have then done a controlled reinstall of the programs I use starting with VS 10+.(even before doing all the windows updates including SP3)
On first install VS worked pefectly and subsequently after installing updates and other programs one at a time until.... I downloaded the latest version of Adobe acrobat reader (9.**)
VS promtly started closing again.
uninstalled Reader and VS OK again.
Did this a couple of times with same result.

Then tried Reader 8.1 --Same result.

Now found Version 7 of Reader on an old programe disc (Photoshop elements 5) and tried that.

This time VS worked properly.

So for me it looks like the culprit(s) are the newer versions of Adobe Reader!

Hope that helps.
