Trial PaintShop X4 won't start

Post by sansay »

I installed the trial version of PSPro X4. Then I started it, filled out my email address, and clicked on OK. The dialog went away and another, completely blank, appeared, with the hourglass mouse cursor. Then nothing happens after that.
I did receive the email confirmation that I was registered. In fact I even did that 4 times...so I got four confirmations.
Yet the darn thing won't start. Now I read somewhere that you can bypass that situation by unplugging the internet cable. So I tried, and sure enough I was able to start it.
However, the next time I start PS I am encountering the same situation. I don't want to have to keep going behind my machine to unplug my network cable.
Does anyone know how to deal with this?
I did try a search in the whole forum but, to my surprise, couldn't find anything relevant.

Thanks for your help.

I have installed the X4 Trial version (downloaded directly from Corel's site).
Installation went well, no issues.

However, when I tried to run X4, a horrible, clueless pop-up appeared!

It said ... "This copy of PaintShop Pro has been damaged or illegally modified. Please reinstall from your original source."

I downloaded again, and the second downloaded file matched the first one in size. So no issues in the download.

Reinstalled. Got the same result.
This is repeatable, even after reboot.
Never had this problem with previous versions.

System:

Windows XP Media Center
3GB RAM
AMD Athalon X2 dual core 4200+, 2.2 GHz
Plenty of HD capacity (over 100 GB of free space).

PSP X3 runs fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

You uninstall the program via the add/remove programs, then create a new windows username with admin rights and use that new username to redownload and install the trial.

You can try and download the trial at http://www.corel.com/akdlm/6763/downloa ... YB30EN.exe

This doesn't sound like a solution.
I am an admin already, with all the admin rights, not a computer novice.
I have been using PSP since its first DOS version.

But thank you for taking the time to reply.

Hi

Cannot Install……….
There have been issues for some users in installing some Corel Products.

By creating a New User Account, installing the software has sometimes been successful.
After which the new account can be removed.
It’s a work-round, and does seem to work for some.

However you are able to install so whether this approach will be successful is to be seen?

Certainly you have some problems, if the download file is not corrupt then the problem has to be associated with your pc. I’m quite new to PSP and have recently installed the trial and full versions without problems.

For what its worth, my original trial download file was 342,020KB
Just downloaded again and its 288.288KB, strange?

Thanks again for the information.

To repeat myself, the first installtion went fine, and PSP confirmed it was successful. Then it didn't run, as I had mentioned.

I downloaded again, uninstalled PSP X4 (verified its complete removal from the registry as well), rebooted, and installed from the new download.
Installation went well also, no issues, PSP verified successful installation, but received the same message when I tried to run it.

Obviously Corel has some setup issues that they need to work on.

Fortunately, I did not remove my PSP X3 or install over it (which, according to Corel, should run just fine, side by side with X4).
X3 is still running fine, no problems.

For the fun of it, I downloaded PSP X4 from the link you just posted, and the file size once again is 282 MB.

I think I will wait until Corel fixes the setup bugs that are lurking somewhere before I upgrade, because I believe the problem is in their tacky verification service PSiService_2.exe, which they started using a couple of versions before, and still using it, unfortunately.
It causes problems to legit users, while it cannot stop pirates from hacking or using PSP.

Thanks.

Exactly.

And yes, I am aware that disabling that service would produce the error message, but the service is running all the time.
I made no attempt to disable it or terminate it (I had no reason to, it's a 30-day free trial anyway).
I need it running for my X3.

As for hacks, it's only a matter of time before hackers find a way to get around it for X4.

Again, Corel makes it harder on legit users! Makes no sense to me.

I agree with you 100%.

Once the software is installed & the proper keys or codes are entered, then just leave me alone to do my work without putting a prison guard over my shoulders running all the time.

I just hope that the Corel people are listening.

We need enough voices to make Corel hear us loud & clear.

OK, everybody, after reading all your comments, I believe I have a pretty good idea of what's going on.
I didn't know that PSPro starting depends on this DRM service.
On my system, for professional reasons, I have VirtuabBox, a virtual environment in which you can run all kind of operating systems, such as Linux, Mac, etc. I even installed a Win95, in order to try an old game that wouldn't run in XP.
In order fort these OSs to be able to connect to the internet VirtualBox creates a new Network Connection that puts itself between the host OS and the internet. This allows it to act as T connector to the guest OS.
The problem is that, as I discovered with another application, some network connecting application use a technology that just will not work through this T.
Now my problem is to figure out what kind of network technology these people use, and see if I can change something in VirtualBox to make it work. I will let you know if I find out.
Note that I also totally agree with you guys, Corel should stop using this permantent DRM. It penalizes people like me that need to work with more complex configurations.
And finally thank you everyone for all your comments. I wouldn't have understood without you.
