file format mismatch

Post by peacefrog »

Hi all,
been capturing into avi, then rendering into mpeg but when it comes to adding background music etc....it comes up with "file format mismatch" and i see that for some reason the rendered file is a "winamp media file" although analysis with gspot says it is mpeg...can anyone clarify this?

cheers

That just indicates that Winamp has taken ownership of the file format through Windows Explorer's file associations. You can change that from Windows Explorer by going to Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types.

In order to add background music, you must select a pure audio file, such as WAV. If you have an AVI file whose audio you wish to use, go to Share -> Create Audio File.

hi thoff,
this exercise is new to me...
i went to file types and checked what was associated
avi=video clip
mp1=winamp
mp2=winamp
mp3=winamp
mpeg=winamp
wav=winamp

i highlighted mpeg and it says for mpeg extension opens with winamp.
Is there a usual setting for mpeg and those above, sorry i'm just not sure of which program/s to use or what the protocol is?

cheers

I don't use Winamp, but I believe it's an audio player only, i.e. it won't play movie files. MPEG, MPG, and MPG2 are usually associated with a full-blown media player such as Windows Media Player, because they generally contain auido AND video.

Ok I'll try this again.. Was posting a reply and my system took a hard crash...

I've used Winamp and it is known for hijacking file associations. Don't use it any more....
Assuming your using WinXP:

First click on the Tools Menu > Folder Options. This will open a dialoge box, having 3 Tabs:
Image

Click on the "File Types" tab. Now you will see a window where you can scroll through all the file tylpes. Scroll down to the file type you want to change, ie; MPEG...
Image

When you highlite it you can see what program it is associated with:
Image

Click on "Change" this will open a dialoge box where recommended programs are offered or you can click on Browse to look for the program you want to associate this file type with...
Image

Once you do that the file type should use the program you selected to open.

Also I think there is a way to do this in Winamp, however like I stated I don't use it now, and I'm not going to install it to find out, my appologies...

Hope that helps

Regards :)

thanks ron and thoff,
i don't know how winamp became the default because up until a few months ago (i never really noticed which prog was opening my media files) everything was going smooth where i could pick a media file to place in
background music or
background clip.
I'm thinking i may have got an update from a disc which included recent winamp.

If i may, could i ask what program people use to open mpeg files with..this may be a beginners101 type question, so forgive the lameness.

thanks

peacefrog,

NOT the tools menu under VideoStudio. Close VS.

He means to goto the "Tools" menu under windows explorer. The
windows file browser.
