PSPX4 Auto-preserve problem
By default, auto-preserve is enabled and I did not change it. However, when a save a changed image file it does not save the original.

Assuming I understand, usually a large assumption 
, this has been discussed before. The original image is actually saved in a hidden folder. If you desire to find the original you have to select "Show Hidden Files and Folders" from the folder options.
Inside explorer (not internet explorer) hit Alt and select "Tools" menu and "Folder Options." Under the Advanced tab there should be an option for showing hidden files and folders.
