VS Pro X4 preview slowdown
Hello,
I have installed Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 (32bit version) on my Win7 64Bit laptop.
But when I easy playback, preview, 2 tracks with a Crossfade the preview slowdown. I remeber X3 on the same laptop works fine.
How can we fix this?
Dennis

Hi Dennis
and welcome to the forums
Please read the post named “Please Read This before Posting” gives some guidance on the details we may require?
Then you could start by telling us about the types of video files you are using, if HD are you using Smart Proxy.
Can you say if you are using the Ultimate X4 version or the older one?
There is a patch for Win 7 compatibility, have you installed patches for X4

Hi Dennis
Apologies for the reference to the Win 7 patch, X4 is of course compatible with Windows 7.
Can you check the Smart Proxy Files via Smart Proxy Manager and make sure the files have been created.

Re: VS Pro X4 preview slowdown
I have the same creap on a different laptop with VS Pro X4
I found that I first ALL files must add to Create Smart Proxy File.... ? That's not user friendly. But maybe that's the thing....

yes, that's!

Re: VS Pro X4 preview slowdown
First of all, your video is AVCHD, which is the most demanding format of all on computer resources. If you look at my Profile, you will see I have a Quad core 2.6 GHz, and its preview in Project mode is also slow, and sometimes jerky, when I preview an AVCHD project. I suppose it depends on your own outlook, but I have learned to live with that since all I really want from a preview is to see that everything is working as it should. I know from hands-on experience that the end result, when I render, will be smooth. Your computer is a little slower, but you could test the final result and see. By the way, mine reacts the same way with AVCHD whether it is X3 or X4, so I am a little surprised that you though you didn't have this problem with X3 ... unless you were using some other format of video.
The very purpose of SmartProxy is in fact to be user friendly. But you have to understand how it works. It takes a difficult format like AVCHD and creates copies of each video clip but using an easy, non-demanding standard definition format. Then you apply and preview your edits of those copy/"proxy" files, and when satisfied, the edits are applied to the original AVCHD and then you produce your final video. But that in itself is a very complex process and cannot be done in just a few seconds as you seem to think it should. So all I can suggest is that you go and have lunch or mow the lawn or something while the proxies are being created.I found that I first ALL files must add to Create Smart Proxy File.... ? That's not user friendly. But maybe that's the thing....

Re: VS Pro X4 preview slowdown
I have made a mistake, perhaps I dind't used HD files in VS X3 (sorry)
I can use as video quality UXP, XP, SP, EP, SSW or SEW. My setting is XP.
Thank for the explanation (both)

Hi Dennis
Have you managed to create the proxy files?
Once created they should show via Settings --> Smart Proxy Manager --> Smart Proxy File Manager
Smart Proxy files are created when inserting a clip to the timeline.
Your existing clips may not have Proxy files created, then "right click" the clip and select Create Smart Proxy Files.
The process takes a long time, view the Queue Manager for progress, do not close Video Studio till this panel is empty.
Also a small double icon is placed within the clip in the timeline to indicate that Proxy files have been created, image below.

Re: VS Pro X4 preview slowdown
I AM a total novice and have a love/hate relationship with media editing like I'm sure many do and would like to learn and EVENTUALLY share some editing knowledge.
Instead of posting another preview question I thought I'd continue here...After reading the question and answers about this problem I was just wondering why the basic editing programme that came with my Kodak 720P video camera plays the preview of the project fine without any proxy files and Pro X4 is very jerky and hard to edit properly because of this?

Re: VS Pro X4 preview slowdown
Hi
Video Studio has two playback modes, notice the words adjacent to the play button Clip and Project
Clip Playback uses the details of the original video file and plays the video similar to using any media player.
Project Playback combines all the details of the timelines then plays the project. The more content you have the more problematic playback can be. Even with only the video file playback can be a little slower than Clip mode.
It also depends on the PC's capabilities......
Smart Proxy creates additional files that allows for smoother timeline playback.
The files do take a while to create, the image above indicates whether files have been created.
If you are having problems with jerky playback then proxy files should certainly improve this.
Make sure they have been created.
I cannot comment on the Kodak program as I have not used it. But maybe its like VS clip mode.

Thanks so much for your quick reply Trevor, I will try that, it is possibly the problem.

Re: VS Pro X4 preview slowdown
Hello,
I have made the video (with using Smart Proxy) and I made a DVD. The quality is so bad that I have tried made Blueray (blu-ray) with this config:
MPEG files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 20000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
Compression 100% quality
The end size is 5,2Gb and the duration 31 minutes.
The originals files of my cam are fine but when I have made the dvd/blueray it's wiht lines and some blocks. Hows that possible?

Re: VS Pro X4 preview slowdown
The Blu-Ray configuration you give is pretty standard. But you don't tell us the format and properties of your *original* video. Put an original clip in the timeline and right click it. Then copy ALL its properties here, please.
SmartProxy is for editing high definition video. Yet you say you made a DVD with the video you produced in SmartProxy... Was that a standard definition, normal DVD, or were you burning a high definition file in its original format to a DVD but as a hybrid Blu-Ray type disc?

When editig is finsh I do:
Share --> Create Disk --> Blu-ray --> change MPEG Settings --> Best_H.264_LPCM -->Customize --> Compression --> Quality 100%
Unmark Create menu
<next> 2x
Create Blu-ray folders <Burn>
How can I make a HD DVD?
Corel is now making an output, but when I select a random file in windows and view the details I see:
Lengte: 00:00:50
Frame widht: 1920
Frame height: 1080
Data rate: 17088kbps
Total bitrate: 17344kbps
Frame rate: 25 frames/second
With VideoStudio X4, see attachment
