unable to capture VS Pro X3

Post by Bucks »

Hi All,

I did a search for this issue but cant seem to find one that exactly matches.

Problem: When I connect my camera and select Capture Video, I receive the error:

Unable to switch to capture mode
Check if your video capture driver is working properly
15023:4:2

I select OK and it properly identifies my camera in source as Canon HV30

Using the VS Pro X3 software, I can play, ffwd, pause, etc the camera however, it will not Capture the video at all

This is on my dads pc. he is running:
- Video Studio Pro x3 Pro which has had all patches applied.
- PC is an intel i5 2500 on a Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard.
- 64 bit Windows 7 Home premium all patches applies
- Canon HV30 connected via firewire

Note, I have used this camera with VS Pro x3 on another pc with no issue.,

not sure if i have got a setting applied incorrectly in vs pro x3 or not.

all advice appreciated.

Hi Glenn

There is a small capture program called Win DV, can you try this, if successful then it proves that the camera and connections are correct.
By the way this program allows you to name the capture files, I find very useful

http://windv.mourek.cz/

As for capture settings, capturing DV via firewire is literally transferring the data, no recoding, so no settings to select.
You simply select DV as the capture format.
Under the Options cogwheel select DV Type 1
At least that’s how it is for standard Mini-DV, suppose it’s the same for the Canon HV 30.

You also want to visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... n-problems and http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... nded-links, since you can capture video using another camera, this means the problem with not with your software or camera.

I capture HDV quite regularly from my own Canon HV20, the predecessor of your own camera... While I have no difficiulty using X2, X3 or X4, in fact I prefer to use another small free program for capturing, called HDVSplit. Unfortunately I don't have a URL for it, but a simple Google search should find it. It has two advantages: as its name implies, it splits the incoming video by scene, and secondly, you set your own name for the incoming video files. I have never had it fail.

WindDV is, of course, only for capturing standard definition DV/AVI, so of course you can use that if you have the HV30 set to downconvert its HDV to DV. As Trevor indicated, it is excellent at its job.

Hi

Thanks Ken, I was unaware that WinDV did not do HD capture. Not owning a HD camcorder makes it difficult to test.

I had assumed that HDVSplit was just an alternative capture software.
Do you know if HD Split will capture standard definition? DV-Avi

Trevor -- you asked:
Do you know if HD Split will capture standard definition? DV-Avi
I have never tried that. But the author's wesbite http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/ only mentions HDV/transport stream mpeg-2. The VideoHelp website, where you will also find a link, also makes no mention of SD DV.

Thanks Graham,
your post above, which links to how to roll back your firewire driver to an earlier 'legacy' version, solved the capture problem for my VS Pro X4, 64 bit Win 7 capturing with a Canon HV20 ! Note the directions don't indicate that a computer restart is required before the fix works.

Generally don't, did you have any programmes running that might have had the firewire port in use? I'll add a sentence warning other users, cheers.

Good point, Graham. I might well have had a program running that has firewire port access; probably did, and then the restart cleared it Perhaps the directions might just remind us to close programs using the firewire port as the first step. Directions are spot on -- clear, accurate, easy to do.
