Pro x4 shuts down when loading video and adding titles
For the last few weeks I have been using the trial version of Pro X4, which I would gladly purchase if not for two recurring problems: (1) The program often shuts down when I am adding subtitles. (2) Sometimes I get the blue screen of death after loading video from my camera.
The subtitle problem is one I have experienced with the old Ulead Video Studio. I have a brand new hard drive with lots of available memory, and I do not have similar problems when using Windows MovieMaker (which I hate to do because VideoStudio is better).
The second problem is more disturbing, because the computer itself shuts down. Again, I have experimented, using Windows MovieMaker to load video, and there is no problem. The crash seems to take place after the video has been loaded, when VideoStudio begins displaying thumbnails of the clips (I load using the "split by scene" feature).
When this happens, I have been getting the "No storage to load BB" message, about which there is a thread somewhere, without a real answer for what "BB" stands for. I have read through this thread, and the suggestion seems to be this has something to do with file size.
Sometimes after I click "okay," my computer monitor goes blue with some an error message that I cannot fully read because it extends off the edges of the screen: something about dumping memory. Some numbers countdown at the bottom of the screen, something about memory dump, but it all disappears before I can read through and make sense of anythingl.
After rebooting, I might also get a message about the file (singular, not plural) being corrupted and therefore not properly saved, but all the clips are there when I look for them.
My hard drive is not short of memory (3/4 empty of 465 GB capacity). I also tried saving directly to my external hard drive (which has 1.5 TB free out of 2 TB capacity). Same problem.

Re: Pro x4 shuts down when loading video and adding titles
I'm afraid I can't help at all with the sub-titles as it is not something I have ever done with Video Studio, apart from normal titles made in the lower third of screen.
On the error message, that earlier thread you mentioned ( http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?p=180793 ) is still the only other time it has been reported here, and another Google search for the text of the message still only links it back to that thread, and nothing else except the already mentioned, and clearly irrelevant, possibility of BB meaning BlackBerry...
But just in case anyone else can think of something, can you please tell us the type of video you are trying to use, and ALL its properties (right clicking, if possible, on any relevant file either in the VS timeline or library window). It would also be useful to know what OS you have, and something about your computer specifications. Can we also assume that you are using 'split by scene' *after* the video has already been captured i.e. it is on your computer in one large file, and you want it split. Or are you trying to use split by scene when actually first capturing the video?

As one who is both new around here and who also has an aversion to cellphones, I am going to go ahead and post this "clearly irrelevant" link to another Blackberry thread I just found. It doesn't take too much of a stretch for me to "assume" that it could be relevant to a mislocated BB driver or a video clip created by one.Ken Berry wrote:and nothing else except the already mentioned, and clearly irrelevant, possibility of BB meaning BlackBerry...
Besides, the postman just delivered 4GB of ram to replace the 1GB in my obsolete Vista laptop as I was reading this thread and there must be an omen in there somewhere.

Re: Pro x4 shuts down when loading video and adding titles
Could this be a font management issue, particularly since Visual Studio X4 Service Pack 1 includes a patch for language bugs and the user is working with titles?Steve Biodrowski wrote: When this happens, I have been getting the "No storage to load BB" message, about which there is a thread somewhere, without a real answer for what "BB" stands for. Legacy versions of Windows (i.e. 3.1 for example) only supported fewer than 256 fonts and later Windows OS versions may have limits 3 or 4 times that number. Is it possible that an attempt is being made to use a bitmap font that is unsupported?

When loading video, I check the "Separate by Scene" box, so the clips should be separated while they are loading, right?
I am using Windows XP on a an ASUS M2N32-SLI DELUXE Mother board with an AMD Anthlon processor.
By the way, the subtitle problem was something I had back with the old Ulead Video Studio, as well.

Re: Pro x4 shuts down when loading video and adding titles
I am still unfortunately no clearer on what you mean by "loading". If you mean capturing it for the first time from your camera into the computer, then 'split by scene' will only work AFAIK with DV/AVI from a mini DV camcorder connected by Firewire. With other video formats, including those captured via USB, split by scene only works *after* the video is captured and you are trying to insert it into VS. So which are you using it on?
And that is also the reason I asked what format your video is, but you still haven't answered that. Moreover, saying you have an Athlon AMD processor is like telling us you have a Ford card, but we are still no wiser as to what model or how powerful it is. If you can find Device Manager in Control Panel, that will at least tell you what size/model your AMD is. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly where that is with XP, though I seem to recall it is under Administrative Tools > Computer Management...

Re: Pro x4 shuts down when loading video and adding titles
I'm sorry if I was not clear but I was trying to answer several questions spread out over different replies.
I am "capturing" video from a Sony Handicam in DV/AVI format, via Firewire. This has always worked for me in the past with the old Ulead Video Studio, and initially worked with the X4 trial version.
The processor shows up under device manager as "AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+"

Hm, the Corel Website says that their Technical Support team monitors these forums. I would have thought there would be some motivation to suggest a solution for a problem that's preventing me from buying the product.

Re: Pro x4 shuts down when loading video and adding titles
Regardless of what they might claim, we regulars here know from quite long experience that about the only part of the Board they ever look at -- and don't seem to take much notice of -- is the Wish List posts at the head of each forum. We have Abiel who seems to work for Corel, though I am still not sure in exactly what capacity. But he is not part of the development team. We help out here where we can, but if you want your views known by Corel, you need to contact them directly.

Hi Steve
My own thoughts here, the blue screen of death (bsod) you have experienced is probably your pc, the graphics card or drivers.
I would not have thought it is associated directly with Video Studio, other than the program being more demanding on your pc.
Having said that you don’t show your PC details, can you update your profile to include these.
You are also experiencing capture problems, again maybe a pc problem rather than X4.
There is a free capture program called Win DV please use this to capture your DV-Avi footage.
Many on the forum use this program in preference to Video Studio as it gives the option to name the capture files. (capture as Split by Scene)

Re: Pro x4 shuts down when loading video and adding titles
Thanks, Ken: I have contacted Corel directly.
Thanks, Trevor: I will try WinDV for capturing video.
For the time being, I have given up on Pro X4, and re-loaded my old VideoStudio 9 onto the computer. That program gave me trouble with subtitles, but never the blue-screen of death for capturing video.
