HD-editing in VS X4; is that for real? Vidstills also in HD?

Post by Jan-61 »

Hello, I am new here, although I use VideoStudio since it was under Ulead version 8 and CorelDraw GS version 11.

As I updated to a new camcorder (Sony HDR-CX130) and computer, I have a question about VS X4, that I am using.

VS X4 is presented being a kind od ideal editing HD/AVCHD. I started to edit my MPEG-2_TS files with the presumption that I really was editing in HD. It goes quite well on my new PC, without Smart Proxy turned on!
In the future I want to burn them on BlueRay-disks. Therefore I want to save my new projects in HD-mode.

But then I took a Look at the Project Properties and it is defaulted to MPEG-files 720x576 pix; SD-resolution. It seems that it is not possible to insert a Full-HD template or Full-HD-matching parameters. Media-type can't be changed to anything else then PAL-DVD.

One other issue then is that I use to use slow-motion and stills in my video-projects, for action-shots. Then I saw also that the stills (Snapshots token using 'Edit>Snapshot' (Correct? I use the dutch version)) don't have 1920x1080 pix, but 1024x576 pixels instead.

I searched the forum and found this topic about the projectproperties vis-a-vis HD-editing:
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=43681

As far understood, the projectproperties don't matter that much, all material will be rendered Full-HD (upscaled?) in the share-step when selecting BluRay-disc or AVCHD-Video File.

Then my questions:

- What is then the use of Smart Proxy and the Project Properties-Dialogue?
- Will the stills be upscaled, so they integrate seamlessly in the endresult?
- Is there a way to change the videostill/snapshot resolution to Full HD?

Regards :) ,

Hi

I think Corel are a little slow in addressing the Project Properties with regards to setting them as HD properties.

Ultimately they only have to reflect the aspect ratio, widescreen 16:9.

When you finally create a video file you do NOT use Same as Project Settings.
Choose either Same as First Video or one of the HD templates, depending on what you are trying to create.
There is also Make Movie Templates Manager which allows you to create your own template.

Taking a Snapshot

There are two options, Using Clip Playback or Project Playback.
If you choose Clip Playback then the image size will use your video frames size, using only the video frames content. (1920 x 1080.)

From Project Playback, the snapshot uses the Project Property size. The image will include all detail as seen within the preview screen. As you found using 1024 x 576
-------------------------------
As a work-round----Change the project properties to use 1920 x 1080 and your images will be 1920 x 1080.

Settings-Project Properties (Alt+Enter)
Edit File Format ---Microsoft Avi Files
Edit
Avi Tab
Compression to Microsoft Video 1 (there may be others you can use—Div X ??)
General Tab
Frame Size---User Defined to 1920 x 1080

Ok now the screen shots should all use the larger image size.

As I say I think Corel have to do a bit of catching up with HD Project Properties.

Where there’s a will there’s a way………….
------------------------------------
Smart Proxy is enabled by default, so if you haven’t turned it off, then you will be using Smart Proxy

I think trevor answer all of your question.

Project Properties dialog box is a way for you to setup the look and quality of your HD video when you preview it on-screen.

SmartProxy is a way for videostudio to avoid your computer for using too much resources when working with HD video. But it looks like your computer is more than capable in handing HD video.

Thanks for the anwers, Trevor and Abiel!

I will go ahead with them and try teh work-arounds! :)

My point about the Smart Proxy was, that if CVS14 (X4) is defaulted to 720 x 576 p., Smart Proxy (to me) seems a sort of redundant.

Hi

Smart Proxy files are created when a video file using a frame size greater than 720 x 576 is added to the timeline. All HD video sized will have proxy files created.
