Playing multiple titles in a row...

Post by Number9 »

Hi All,

Just finished a DVD for my Dad's 50th birthday, using DVDWS2 (full version) - full of clips from home videos, birthday messages, and some slideshows interspersed amongst the video.

Now because I had to create each section bit by bit, I now have 23 titles on the disc, which I've used a 'Play All' button to try and make into one hour-long programme.

The disc's now burned, and watching it on my standalone player, if you select 'Play All' from the main menu, it does play all the titles in order. So far so good. But if during playback, you use the forward button to skip a title, when it gets to the end of the next title it then returns to the main menu, when obviously what I want it to do is carry on playing the rest of the titles in order.

The same thing happens if I select a starting point from my 'Title selection' menu that I created. If I select title 8, say, then it plays title 8 through to 23. But if I start watching 8, decide I want to skip on to 9, and then watch title 9 to the end, it returns to the main menu at the end of title 9 instead of playing title 10.

Very annoying. Is there a way around this? Or do I really need to find some way to merge all my titles into one long MPEG-2 file and then use DVDWS2 to create chapter points instead?

Any help gratefully received!

add a chapter about one second before the end of each title (they don't have to be on your menus). Then when you press "next", it will jump to that chapter, but hopefully continue playing through to the next title.

Genius idea! Thanks very much...

Is this a limitation of DVDWS, or of the DVD standard in general? Obviously this will work fine but it doesn't seem like the way things *should* work, you know?!

This happens in other "Advanced" authoring packages as well (I've seen it mentioned about other software). I believe it happens for the following reason...

When you create your dvd. there are commands (pre/post) that are checked before and after your title plays (this is a simple explanation).

Let's say one of the "AFTER" (or post) commands for Title-1 is to go to the start of Title-2. When you hit the "next" button on the remote control, you are skipping over those "post" commands, so the dvd jumps to whatever it thinks should be next -- like the menu or something based on other navigational commands in your dvd structure.

When you add the dummy chapter before the end of Title-1, the skip (or jump to) goes to that point, but plays to the end of Title-1, and then checks those "post" commands and realizes it should play Title-2.

This is what I think is going on, and you could code the pre/post commands differently to handle this situation. But that's another story...

Thanks very much George,

That's worked a treat now, thanks again!

Only thing is that you can't insert chapter marks into slideshows, so those still have the same problem if you try and skip them.

I guess a workaround would be to create a dummy DVD just with the slideshows, burn it to DVD folders, then go into the DWS_TS folder and grab the MPEG files of those slideshows and add those into my real DVD instead of the actual slideshows.

Bit of a pain but should work...

It's good, I learn what *not* to do everytime so that each DVD I make gets quicker...
