PNG JPG Question

Post by budbon »

Having been married 50 years, I am putting together a slideshow video using VSP X4. I use the timeline as a background and work with photos on the overlay lines. I recentally discovered I could use PNG images instead of JPG's and because of the transparency did not have a problem with the black borders when I zoomed out. Is this a normal way of working on overlay lines or is there some negative issues using the PNG format? Is there a better way?

you can use the picture in picture filter in the overlatrack to zoom in and out your pictures with no black borders, and then copy and paste the first sampel to the other pictures.

Thanks KOBRA76, that sounds like it could save converting JPG to PNG, but I don't quite understand the process. I pulled 4 photos into the first overlay track and added the picture in picture to the first one. Are you saying to copy attributes on the first and paste attributes in the others? Or, could you walk me thru it?

Hi

Not sure I fully understand as I see a black border when using both types.
There are ways to get rid of them, but this may also affect the image .

Can you give details of the size of the images you are using in Pixels.
Are you using Widescreen 16:9 or 4:3

Yes i think Kobra76 is saying just that, Copy and Paste attributes can be quite useful.

I am using widescreen 16:9. Here is what I am hoping to accomplish. I use the timeline main track for a background color. I then insert a photo or photos onto the overlay track and adjust them to the size I like. Lets say I want to use Pan & Zoom "Customize" to zoom out on a particular photo. As I zoom out there are black borders that squeeze in on sides as well as top and bottom. I know I can change the border color on the customize page but often can't match my original color on the main (background) timeline. I was hoping to in some way have transparent borders on the Pan & Zoom Customize.

Hi

Do the images show a black border before applying Pan & Zoom?

Chroma Key will remove selected colours.
So if you apply it to remove Black then the borders will become transparent, this may affect the image as black will also be removed.

Select image in timeline
Select attributes tab
Chroma Key
Apply Overlay Options
Similarity, select black

Use this option when using P-in-P

No, the images do not show black borders before using pan and zoom. I have PNG photos in the overlay track.

You first insert one foto to the overlay track then you put the pip effect on him.then you adjust the pan and zoom by the key frame and press ok.
now you right click the first picture and copy it to the next picture.you now insert difrent picture by presing and holding ctr botton

Hi Kobra76

Thanks for the P-in P video.

There is an easier way of duplicating the P- in – P from first to all.

Add all images to the timeline
Set the P- in – P effect to the first image.
Right click first image and select “Copy Attributes”
Use Shift + Click to select all clips, (first and last) right click and select “Paste Attributes”

The copy attributes and pasting them to all pictures would be fine except the photos were scanned from old photo albums and cropped in PSP. Some were very small. some larger and the aspect ratio's varied. This causes many of the photos to be distorted when the paste attributes is used. Even with that, the P in P does not solve the issue. Take any photo, put it in any of the timelines. Now go to the Custozw Pan & Zoom. Zoom out so the photo is smaller than the pan and zoom frame and you have borders (black default) showing in the photo. I was hoping these borders could somehow be transparent. I guess this is impossible.

I actually think you are on the right track with PNG. JPEG does not support transparancy, but PNG does. It's been awhile since I've done anything like that, so I can't help you with the details, but the transparancy is called the "alpha channel".

I usually create a 4x3 or 16x9 solid color background and drop the image on top of that background. I don't see why you can't do the same thing with a transparent background.
