Blank Screen, Sound Works

Post by Mijo »

I have an issue with WinDVD 2010 Pro not displaying Blue Ray video. Everything worked fine with MSI K9NGM3-FIH MB NVidia GeForce 7050PV, then ASUS M3N78-EM NVidia GeForce 8300. I'm now running an ASUS M4A88T-M ATI Radeon 4250. Had not used Blue Ray drive on the ASUS until few days ago. WinDVD came up fine. As soon as a DVD or BD Disc is read I get MS Error. Solved that by using natakuct's fix "WinDVD has stopped Working". Then had the AVG problem with
"Win32/Themida virus in file: C:\ProgramData\Corel\Common\DVD10\RSG04.cpl" problem. Fixed that. So now DVD's come up and play just fine. Blue Rays come up but just the Sound with Blank Screen. I can fiddle with mouse at bottom of screen to find the play button which is there and does start. So apparently it's tied in with the ATI Radeon Graphics. Anyone come up with answer for driver version that works? Any Codecs needed?

Follow up: I've Observed that Bluray is recognized as MPEG BD-J for Video, DTS HD BD-J for Audio. Not sure what MPEG it should be. Again it had worked at one time.

As I understand it, all Blu-Ray is based on the mpeg-2 transport stream format, even when -- strangely enough -- your direct format is AVCHD which is of course mpeg-4. And I am talking about Blu-Ray discs burned with either BD mpeg-2 HD video or AVCHD video... As I say, sounds, strange, but that is my understanding ... though I suspect I am going to be shouted down as wrong...

Additional Info. In my quest to get the BluRay portion of my Samsung SH-B083L Drive to display BD content with WinDVD I tried updating/backdating the ATI Radeon HD 4250 drivers, even updating codecs from AMD but not only no luck with BD, now even DVD video doesn't show. Sound still there. Still digging but I'm getting to feel the ATI Radeon HD 4200 series does not work very well with BD or DVD.

Uninstalled AVG Completely and WinDVD. Reinstalled WinDVD. Same problems. From what I see on AMD site the Radeon HD 4200 Series not listed at all for Bluray. Can you say bend over....ouch.

Update: Apologies to ATI. Seems the 4200 series does allow Bluray. See comments in next post.

Research Findings: Decided after trying to see if WinDVD would recognize other codecs that this attempt only made matters worse. Decided to install Win 7 x64 anew and built it up to just what was needed. Media Player would finally show DVD's again. Installed WinDVD new up to service pack 5. Yahooey! DVD and Bluray played fine. Then tried service pack 6 (patch 7.5) and got a "WTF" as the famous hidden virus reported by AVG showed up again. Fixed that. Then crashed on opening due to 2nd ATI Hi Def Audio. Disabled and no crash but something new. AACS Key error. Arrgh.

Sooo....Un-installed WinDVD and cleaned out registry. Re-installed back up to service pack 5. Worked just fine again. Note I will not update to service pack 6 (patch 7.5) as evidently there was a failure in Corel Quality Control on this patch. Been reading WinDVD Pro 11 not much better with bugs.

Side note. I must have missed reading the fine print that the AACS Key has to be updated every 18 months. Another "WTF".

In Summary it now works!
