Videostudio 11+ won't load any .avi files,it just gives the message 'catastrophic failure'. Even if I scan the dv tape with the program it will save the files as avi but it still won't let me use them.
Any ideas?

Re: Can't load avi file
Have you tried reinstalling VS 11+? I ask since a catastrophic failure message would seem to indicate that something indeed catastrophic has happened inside VS. And since DV/AVI is a solid format using a driver installed as part of Windows, perhaps a reinstall might be required.
However, you might first want to see if an update of your DirectX might fix things. There is a sticky post at the top of this forum giving a link. Sometimes regular Windows updates create conflicts with existing programs like VS -- though I confess I have not heard of them causing your sort of problem...
Not that DirectX must be updated manually. It is not part of the customary windows update process. Download it, then create a folder on your system to extract the files into, because it will extract around 200 files, and I sure wouldn't want them running loose. Once extracted, locate inside the folder the DXSETUP.exe file and run it. Once it has finished installing you can delete the folder containing all the extracted files.

Re: Can't load avi file
Hi Ken,
Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try. I did remove & reinstall VS then added the hotfix in the downloads page but I still have the same result except that now I can't capture from a dv tape - I can scan it then do the capture but if I just try the straightforward capture it tells me that the file is corrupted and has been deleted.
I'm afraid I don't know what a sticky post is or how to find one on the forum, could you kindly tell me how?
Regards,
Doug

Re: Can't load avi file
A sticky post is one with virtual glue on it so that it sticks to the top of the forum and doesn't move down the list once you have read it. When you open this forum you see a page full of individual posts. At the very top there is a section outlined in blue called Announcements. This is full of sticky posts, including the one I am referring to. But to cut it short, it is this one: http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 63#p184763

If the error 'catastrophic failure' only happens with .AVI, then you may want to update the codec on your computer.
Here are some of the codecs that you may want to install.
RealPlayer: http://www.real.com/
DivX: http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack
XviD: http://downloads.xvid.org/downloads/xvidcore-1.3.2.zip
