50/60p is part of the AVCHD Spec!

Post by jmone »

I've been a long time VS user but recently defected to PD9 due to the lack of AVC 1920x1080 @ 50/60p support in VS. In monitoring the threads here I've seen posts the Corel are not keen on introducing support for the higher frame rate but I'd like to report that this is now official part of the AVC spec - http://www.avchd-info.org/format/ - no more excuses or even more of us will defect.

FYI - AVC at 50/60p is very very good, even novices are stunned at how good this looks on a big screen TV, I always get a comment and questions on how this was produced.

Thanks, but I have been mentioning that change in the standard for some time now, and citing it as even more reason for Corel to lift its game in this regard. I was the beta tester of X4 who first suggested it to Corel during the beta testing...

Thanks Ken - I just pop back now and then.... Like all products, PD9 is not without it's issues but at present it is leading the $100 Consumer market in this area.

Yes. I agree it is very short sighted of Corel. The answer they gave me at the beta testing time was two fold: the first was that 1080p at 50/60 fps was not part of the international standard. That was true then -- when only 720p came in 50/60 fps varieties, but as we agree, is no longer the case. And the second reason was that there were not many users of the new 50/60p camcorders out there. That may also have been the case then, but is certainly no longer the case. If Corel had been a little less short-sighted they would have been market-leader in the field. Now it will be another case of catch-up...

For AVCHD on a DVD you are still limited to 1080 50i/60i and 720 50p/60p.

So if I buy a new camcorder and record at 60fps I cannot edit it in X4 as it stands?

Not if it is 1080p at 60 fps. You can do it if it is 720 p at 60 fps and you can produce an output video using the .avi extension, though within that, you would use mpeg-2 transport stream format at 60 fps. But of course with that you cannot burn a Blu-Ray (or AVCHD) disc, and I am not sure how many media players will play an .avi with that format.

When I was reading the mostly favorable reviews of Corel Video Studio X4 on Amazon and other sites a month or so ago, I was astounded that complaints about computer crashes were in the minority. So it may be that Corel has hit the sweet spot of performance with currently available consumer level computers.

Next year it may be a different story for any video editing software that does not have 64 bit 1080P @60fps transcoding support, however.

Any word on if Corel is contemplating the introduction of the new spec in VS Pro X5?

Not to us mere mortals! It would be nice to think that they would include it in a service pack for X4. But that is probably not going to happen, so the best we probably can hope for is that it will be in X5. However, that is purely speculation.
